The Covid-19 virus pandemic
The Covid-19 virus pandemic is a current issue affecting almost every country in the world. The virus was reported first in China in December 2019, but early January started spreading to the other parts of the world. It has caused a lot of deaths in various countries in Europe. Lately, the virus has spread in the U.S., causing many negative impacts. This has led to the need for significant financial intervention by the government and private sectors. In March 2020, Amazon announced to donate $1 million to four Washington DC community groups to support the people who have been impacted by the covid-19 virus in Washington D.C. The groups include Arlington Community Foundation, ACT for Alexandria, Greater Washington Community Foundation and Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. The groups will use the funds to buy food, offer shelter and emergence assistance to the needy people in the state. Furthermore, Amazon is actively donating cash to food banks that help the most vulnerable population in Washington. The cash banks include D.C. Central Kitchen, Capital Area Food Bank, Martha’s Table, and Arlington Food Assistance Center. All these donations are aimed at helping the needy people in the community of Washington because the pandemic has negatively impacted society. The importance of the initiative that Amazon took is that it will help people to survive during this pandemic as many people, especially casual laborers have lost their jobs to keep safe.
The Covid-19 virus has had various negative impacts on society. Life has changed, and even if a person is not infected. For instance, workers who depend on the daily income for survival can no longer go to jobs because employers have closed working places to help reduce the spread of the virus. Likewise, the residents who have small businesses have closed to stay at home, an essential strategy that is advocated for containing the spread of the virus. This makes these vulnerable groups suffer as they may not have enough food or lack food ultimately. The intervention by Amazon, a leading business organization in the U.S., is of great help to the community. So many people who would otherwise suffer will be able to benefit from the problems. Likewise, the already infected people will benefit from the $1 million donations, among the other mentioned Amazon mentioned community-based supports. There are various things that I have learned in the article. First, I have learned that business organizations play a more significant role in supporting vulnerable members of society. Not only Amazon but also other business organizations like Nissan have supported the community during this hard time when some people in the society are suffering. Giving out $1 million in donations for altruistic intentions is an indication that business organizations value human life.
Second, I have learned that as people, we should always help the needy. We should not watch other people face challenges while we can assist. Helping does not only benefit the needy but is making the donor happier. It also leads to stronger community relationships. For instance, a person who will benefit from the Amazon donations will always appreciate the company and will also support the company. If many businesses support the vulnerable populations in their regions during a covid-19 pandemic, many people will remain healthy. However, I have two questions regarding the $1 million Amazon donation in Washington DC. Is it ethical for Amazon to donate only $1 million while it makes a billion profits it makes from the same community? Second, which criteria will the community groups use to establish the neediest people in society?
