The Critical Analysis Paper asks you to practice understanding and evaluating someone else’s view, ultimately to argue for the success or failure of that view (your thesis). To practice the critical thinking skill of understanding someone else’s view, you are asked to charitably and systematically reconstruct an author’s argument. Your aim is to try to give the most complete and strong view of the author’s argument that you can. To practice the critical thinking skill of evaluating someone else’s view, you are asked to develop and respond to a philosophical objection. Pose a response to the objection. You should directly respond to the challenge posed by the objection, explain the response, and explicitly state how it is supposed to preserve the logic of the author’s argument. 5. Clear and direct communication of ideas. Specifically, you need to clearly explain the main ideas of the author’s argument, the objection and response you consider, and the reasoning for your own thesis. 6.
