THE DANGER OF A SINGLE STORY.
Having started reading books at a tender age Adichie became exposed to literature.She grew up reading British and American books.She had the passion of writing and she wrote books that were based on her earlier experience of literature. She believed that books must include characters who are foreigners. . Her books had characters who were mainly the whites. Adichie at 19 years went to The United States to study in the university. This exposed her to more literature.
Adichie was motivated to write after she discovered African literature. Books authoured by Chinua Achebe and other African writers motivated her .She was motivated that people like her could exist in literature.The discovery of African literature led her to produce her own African books.
The purpose of writing this book was to let the world understand that Africa had greater minds than presumed. It is not just a land with a beautiful landscape that could be deceived by the whites. It is not a place filled with negativity.Adichie based her explanation from the story of their houseboy Fide. He was from a very poor family.They couldnot even get all meals required in a day.
At one point Adichie’s family decided to visit Fine’s home.Adichie was surprised to see Fine’s brother weave beautiful baskets and not only him but almost everybody from that family. This indicated that Africa had the positive side and a potential for greatness.By this Adichie disregards the fallacy that Africa is poor and undeveloped.
Adichie claims on the side of the authenticity of Africa. Bearing the fact that many people believe that Africa as a dark continent ,She wanted to change this. Her professor complained that her book was not Africa authentic.The professor stated that the characters in the book were middle level and lived a better life.Therefore Adichie claims that the people are one thing and that one thing they become.
In this text other writers such as Adichie are targeted in terms of the content of their books. A book should have both sides of a story. Also people at large should not be judgemental and shouldn’t be biased.The text above is a successful address of improving literature since she shows that all people have one story and all areas have both sides of each story.
