The Dark Knight analysis

Films constitute various parts, from script writing to screenplay, all with an important purpose of serving a story. What makes The Dark Knight a distinct film from other films is its focus on the screenplay. Camera movement helps to convey meaning in the event of chaos and corniness in a shot. In this scene Dark Knight, Nolan uses camera movement in a fascinating way, making viewers understand the Joker’s view of the world. The Joker from Batman’s view, upside down, then, by the end of the shot, things inverse so that things become uncommon. This ensures the viewers are apprehended to the Joker’s perspective of the world as chaotic and disorderly.

In the hospital scene, the lighting guides the viewers to the Joker and Harvey Dent’s coin. Dent uses his coin as a motif when deciding to kill someone or not, and this is the part the Joker’s fate is revealed. However, the coin is not that important because in the shadows, the Joker’s hand is seen holding a gun so that Dent cannot kill him. That which makes the Joker be referred to as Joker is his scars and makeup which are important aspects in this scene. The Joker’s face is covered with rubber and plasticine to cover scars while the rest of his costume is designed to add humor to this scene. He wears a woman’s nurse suit to disguise himself which makes the scene become serious and whimsical.

The use of montage editing is effective in this film as it helps to show different perspectives in the heist. While in the car, low lighting builds a dark atmosphere as it shows the evilness of the clowns. The shoulder shot of the clown at the back of the car shows a gun. Guns are implications of death, which clearly show the intentions of the clowns to the audience. The fact that the Joker does not speak and the manner he clicks his gun shows how ruthless he is. The masks are designed to be a distraction to the audience from viewing the character’s emotions. Nolan creates audience anticipation to see Batman back to Gotham city by introducing an arc of Batman achievement of climbing out of the pit without using a rope by using cross-cutting editing.

At the beginning of the scene, the diegetic sound is used to emphasize the realism of the movie and showing that even after the Joker being a prisoner, he is still in charge as he vocally overpowers Commissioner Gordon. This sound continues to build emotion in the audience even after Gordon uncuffs the Joker having in mind that the monster being released will create tension and fear. Next in the scene, diegetic sound continues as both Batman and the Joker engage in a conversation putting a pause of tension, increasing tension suspense to the viewers. It is also in this scene where a non-diegetic sound is used to create a sense of calmness. The final act intensifies non-diegetic sound as the action sound increases the tempo. It mirrors Batman’s anger as he beats the Joker. This effect is paired by diegetic sound as Batman interrogates The Joker.

The Joker is the main antihero created in the film. Batman helps Commissioner Gordon to clean up the city crimes as Harvey Dent leads the legal assaults on crime organizations. The Joker, in turn, offers to kill Batman in return for half the crimes proceeds in Gotham city gangs. Commissioner Gordon and Batman come to realization for the need to team up and defeat after the death of commissioner Lowe, but Gordon in the process ends up dead too. Most of the film, Batman, tries to bring equilibrium in Gotham by getting rid of the Joker even after Dent becoming corrupt.
