The Emergence of Ryan Coogler in the Film Industry

The current century contains several milestones in the film industry. These improvements include advancements not only in the content that most films possess but also the advanced abilities that the directors portray in their work. In comparison to the movie at the beginning of the century and the previous, the current film depicts advanced aspects of production, style, and themes. According to the auteur theory, in any film, the director plays the most significant role in its production and should always receive credit for the quality of the end product. More than the author of the screenplay, the director oversees the visual and audio elements of the film. Therefore the directors should receive all the credit for the advances in the film industry. Ryan Coogler is one of the most outstanding producers who have been consistent in the advancements of the films that they direct. The major identities of Coogler’s films are his sociopolitical savvy, technical skill, and smart storytelling instincts. Yes, Coogler is a burgeoning auteur due to his application of centralized and subjective control to many aspects of collaborative creative work in the movies under his direction. His emergence is evident from his film Fruitvale Station of 2013, Creed of 2015, and Black Panther of 2018, whose themes, styles, and production depict his emergence as an auteur.

Themes

Coogler portrays his authorial signature through portraying themes on emerging issues in the society throughout his films. Most films depict the themes that have a relationship to the occurrences in contemporary society. Such films gain popularity amongst the audience not only for their ability to reflect on the society but also for their ability to educate and motivate them on how to handle such issues when they arise. In his three films, Coogler was successful in creating his authorial signature by maintaining emerging themes that are essential to society. These themes include the rise of blacks in power, social injustice, and family relations (Disset, 2017). Since they appear as the major themes in all the three films, one can view them as Coogler’s authorial signature.

Rise of Blacks in Power

In Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station, the theme rise of blacks in power is Coogler’s authorial signature. For a long time in the 21st century, the rise of the blacks to overcome the notion that most people in the society have on them has always hit both the media and the film industry as a major topic. Most blacks believe that society views them as powerless due to their history of suffering and having to endure slavery. With this history, society always has a notion that blacks cannot become powerful leaders. Coogler attempts to prove this notion wrong by depicting the theme rise of Africans in power in his movies. For instance, in Black Panther, he portrays how T’Challa overcomes several challenges and still ends up becoming the leader. He fights through several battles and oppositions that attempt to deny him his power after the death of his father. In Creed, Coogler attempts to bring out the theme of the rise of blacks in power by depicting the strengths of Donnie in overcoming obstacles such as his detention but still ends up becoming a great fighter like his father.

Similarly, Coogler portrays the same theme in Fruitvale Station by depicting the difficulties that Oscar undergoes to redeem himself by repairing his relationships with both his mother and his girlfriend. He was weakened by his past mistakes, such as infidelity and drug use, which weakened his power in the family. As depicted by Coogler, in all the three films, when they rise to power after the numerous struggles, they do not disappoint as they become great leaders (Cummings, 2019). These acts represent how blacks are rising to power despite the numerous obstacles that a portion of the contemporary society attempts to put against them, which is Coogler’s authorial signature.

Social Injustice

Coogler’s portrayal of the high levels of social injustices that exist in contemporary society as a major theme in Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station. Social injustice is a common phenomenon in contemporary society whereby some individuals receive irrational treatments from others even when they do not deserve it. In most instances, the individuals that suffer social injustice in the community are mainly blacks and women. In Black Panther, Coogler displays how Nakia and T’Challa discuss issues facing Wakanda, such as human trafficking, refugees, poverty, and racial inequality. Despite Wakanda being rich in technologies created by the use of vibranium, the society faces social injustice as some people still face difficulties in some parts of the kingdom. In Fruitvale Station, Crooger addresses the theme of social injustice through portraying issues such as unemployment, gang involvement, racial prejudice, and inequality. Social injustice is evident when the police, because of his profession, is not convicted for murder even after it is clear that he intentionally killed a person (Cummings, 2019). This act depicts social injustice as some individuals in the same society serve jail terms because of minor offenses. Similarly, in Creed, as the film begins, Donnie is serving a jail term for an offense he did not commit. This act greatly hinders his dream of becoming a professional boxer as he spends more time in the detention center. The theme of social justice is Coogler’s authorial signature, as it appears in all the three films that he directed.

Family Relations

The family relations theme is Coogler’s authorial signature as he displays it in all his three major films. Family relations are a significant issue in contemporary society, specifically when individuals have to make a decision based on the family connection that they have amongst each other. In his films, Coogler mainly bases on the importance of family relations in society. In Black Panther, the family relation between Shuri and his brother T’Challa is beneficial. The importance of this relationship is evident when Shuri gives T’Challa advice and weapons for him to take control of the kingdom. This act depicts the benefits of family relations in the society as it helps T’Challa to win and become the leader of Wakanda. In Creed, Coogler depicts family relations through his struggle to maintain his father’s legacy. His connection with his father motivates him to work hard to attain these goals. Croogler also displays family relations in Fruitvale Station when he depicts how Grant’s grandmother Bonnie, Wanda, who is his mother and his girlfriend Sophina, plays an essential role in his life by acting as pillars (Disset, 2017). For instance, Wanda always prays for him, gives him good advice and food. The theme of family relations is Coogler’s authorial signature as he constantly displays the importance of family relations to the major characters in all films.

Character Selection

Coogler’s selection of characters in Black Panther, Creed, and Fruitvale Station observes a consistent pattern, which is also his authorial signature. In all three films, he uses black individuals as the protagonists. Also, most of his characters in all three films are black, which is an essential choice displaying his dominant theme of the rise of blacks in power. In Black Panther, T’Challa, who is the hero of Wakanda, is black. Besides, other main characters are blacks except for Klaw and Everett. Coogler also uses Donnie, who is black, as the main character in the film, Creed. In Fruitvale Station, Oscar Grant, the protagonist, is black. Also, in all the three films, Coogler features Michael B. Jordan as either the protagonist or the antagonist (Disset, 2017). This choice of characters is an authorial signature that is evident in all three films.
