The hair
Hair plays a more significant role in portraying the image people see. Hair has a sense of image, it has been recognised as a tool of political statement. Many black women struggle with the issue of hair appearance;hence it is considered as one of their weakness in politics.There is a need for all black Americans to accept the fact that as much as they are different, they have the same rights as the other races. Taking themselves will be the first step for them being winners in politics.If black women want to win in politics, then they should be confident with their hair and skin colour.
Through accepting the image of their hair,being confident, and being courageous to face criticism, black women will show the world a positive political statement.
Here is the importance of accepting the image of their hair, “Though today the Afro has a less political meaning, in the late 1960s it was associated with both a movement and a black woman. The movement was black power…” (Banks 15). It shows how the style of hair of black women, gave them the power to face their opponents.
Here is the point of being confident. “Black female employees went to court to challenge a policy by Hyatt Hotels and American Airlines against wearing braids” (Banks 16). It shows how black women were confident in their appearance.
On being courageous to face criticism, “…hair has the ability to “trump” race and skin colour when assessing favouritism and privilege in inter-and intracultural settings.” (Banks 30). When a black woman appreciates who she is, she can trump in any environmental context.
The evidence shows that if black women accept their hair, become confident and courageous in facing criticism; they will be able to portray a positive political statement. It also gives the importance of accepting who you are and being positive is in your capabilities.
