The Hollow Men
The Hollow Men is one of the greatest Fan Fiction genres works any reader would come across. This work succeeds as a Fan Fiction because I am one of the greatest aficionados of the character Harry Potter. From the work, I was able to reflect on some of the traits I have believably known about Harry Potter. From the speaker’s tone, a reader can easily connect well with the work because it is a depiction of the lives of two characters that once lived together, but one of them decides to embrace a rather natural and wildlife.
When Steve comes to take Bruce home from Uganda, they decide to explore much of the African natural resources, wildlife, and other forms of nature. While in their exploration adventures, they begin to view the resources differently. These two friends begin to think of the various possible ways that these natural resources can be productive to them. While at the Victoria Falls, Bruce gets fascinated by the breeze, spray, and the spectacular height of the falls. He then tells Steve that there is still a lot to discover. I believe he said this as a result of his intent to harness hydro-electric power from the massive storms produced by the falls. The wildlife and all other aspects of nature began to make sense in a different perspective as a result of their joint influence. Previously, Bruce was all alone in Uganda until Steve came to influence him on giving life a different perspective. Bruce now feels that they need to go beyond the aesthetics that surrounded them and begin putting these resources into use. Steve, with the western culture, did not know the natural beauty of these resources. That is why when he arrives in Uganda to fetch Bruce, the narrative and perception of Bruce’s environment changes. The duo begins to see the possibility of harnessing everything around them.
Harnessing these resources might be beneficial, but in the long run, it would lead to serious problems. Firstly, diverting the river, according to Bruce’s thoughts, would impact the ecosystem as several animals depend on it for food, water, and habitat. Some of the flora might also perish as a result of inadequate water. Exploiting wildlife resources like hunting for game meat, poaching for trophies, and even sport hunting for fun was also going to affect the ecosystem and the aesthetic beauty of the land. Bruce appreciated this wildlife for the long time he lived in Uganda, but the arrival of Steve seems to have changed everything. Besides enjoying the scenic views of the resources, they began having second thoughts that were all about exploitation without considering that they depended on the same environment. With the serious problems that could ensue after exploitation, they would have long left to the West.
When considering aspects of autonomy and control, Bruce was independent and lived as a free thinker before Steve came in search of him. His life in Uganda was simple. He did not care about his “cottage” that Steve considered looking like ruins. He appreciated everything around him. Steve, on the other hand, liked being in control. I believe his control and authoritativeness is what changed Bruce. In the broader setting, these two aspects apply just from the opening of this text when Steve arrives. The first thing he tells Bruce is that he has come to take him back home to feature in a film. All these issues led to a bad ending because Bruce seemed not to have been convinced of going back home. He even tells Steve, “When you tell people about Uganda, don’t forget the elephants.”
