After the 9/11 terror attack of the year two thousand and one, the immediate change which was made by our government was the formation of the Homeland security in the year two thousand and three. The department’s role is to protect Americans from the threats of terror attacks. The department s purpose is to keep the Americans in the state of readiness rather than the state of fear of the attack. The department has dedicated more resources to the detection of the threats in or sectors of the economy and has strengthened information-sharing efforts, with all the countries facing similar attacks.
The homeland department also has a mandate of securing our borders. Our northern border and our southern border, our seaports and our air, Every year the department apprehends and deports more than five hundred thousand illegal immigrants. The department helps in disrupting the weapon smuggling, drug, and fuel cartels.
The united states have experienced a significant increase in private security over the last twenty years. There are a couple of reasons which have triggered an increase in the privatization of security. Among them include; rising crimes, laboring of police, and growth of wealth. In the last twenty years, crimes increased vastly in the United States. The higher number of crimes prompted people to want to protect themselves, and this gives rise to an increased number of private security. Also, the development of technology disseminates information uniquely visual information increased the public awareness of the crimes and the dangers and brutality involved in some cases of corruption; this created fear, which led to people wanting to protect themselves through special security measures.
Also, the perception that the police are corrupt caused an understanding that the police might not protect them and their interest good enough. Also, human nature for one to want to protect themselves and their properties caused a radical increase in private security. Further, the establishment of bodies such as ASIS and the increased training programs on safety caused helped in the efforts of privatization of security in the country. The courses provide expertly trained individuals who operate in a well-regulated environment to enhance the area of security abilities to serve themselves and their loved ones. The enactment of the code of ethics and the cooperation of various security organs in the country makes security professionalization in the country a possibility.
Furthermore, the government appreciation of the need and importance of private security is evident from the fact that bills were introduced to help in the regulation of private security. Amongst the bills introduced emphasizing on the importance of private security includes Martinez and Gore.
Since the nine-eleven, the number of businesses that have improved in security includes transit security. Among the measures, the transit agencies have taken to improve security include; assessment of the security vulnerability of the transit system, revision of emergency plans, and training of employees. The transit system has been successful in gaining increased security for the land transportation system, maritime cargo, and the airport.
Other business activities that have experienced change is agricultural. The homemade department introduced changes in agriculture to curb the effects of agroterrorism. Though most Americans are not aware, terrorists carry out terrorism activities through the introduction of harmful pathogens in agricultural products. The homemade department comes in aid of the country to prevent the happening of such by detection of such issues, border protection, and secrecy.
