The Influence of a Church Setting on Christian Identity
The Influence of a Church Setting on Christian Identity by Hyeok Joo on November 30, 2018, provides an identity study of how the church environment can be constructed to influence identity to the churchgoers in terms of coming to terms with their Christian identity. The identity of these groups of people is sociologically consequential in the sense that the people who identify with this identity do so because of favorable treatment from others and a feeling of goodwill that comes from associating with this particular member in the church environment. The people come to make strong bonds through friendships and relationships they can associate with each other in the church environment.
The identity of this study is based on the social context of a church environment where the members associate with each other to form an identity of Christianity. The author states that the environment constructed in the church environment is what enables a person to identify as a Christian. The church is the main venue that the author has used to modify his thesis statement and affirms it through interviews and observations.
The writer claims that identity can be significantly influenced by how the environment around a particular venue is constructed. The church environment is made up in a way that people are highly affected in identifying themselves as a Christian through experience and personal touch with the people in that particular church. The paper has extensively used different types of research in coming up with substantial evidence to support its thesis statements, such as interviews, scholarly references, and observations. The writer has paraphrased and includes direct quotes of published scholarship in the syllabus to support his argument. The best observation that much impressed me is the interview process, where the writer was able to directly quote the response from the churchgoers. The second was the fact that he used different scholarly sources to support his thesis statement. The use of references and direct quotes provides influential features because previous studies back the writer’s argument. The identities of the subject were people of different gender and age.
The paper lacks presentation skills because, in some instances, it has failed to come up with reasonable topic sentences that are critical in a new paragraph. The writer also monopolized his research in one venue, so the data may not be authentic to other similar environments of people claiming the same identity of Christianity. The writer did not include enough direct quotes, which I believe are essential in a research paper. I have been able to gather an idea of coming up with a strong thesis statement and the various ways I can collect data to support my thesis. I have also learned how to include topic sentences in my paragraphs.
I would give this research an A because the writer has used authentic methods and strong points in laying a claim to his thesis statement. The inclusion of interviews and other forms of research methods and the availability of an actual venue is commendable. The author had also nailed it when it came to the use of the English language through the absence of grammatical errors.
Section B
The identity I have chosen as sociological significance is sexual orientation and how our immediate environment affects how we approach different sexual orientations.
This issue is crucial in the current society because people who identify as members of LGBTQ+ have, for decades, faced backlash in terms of discrimination and sexual harassment. The issue of equality regarding respecting people’s sexual orientation and the members of LGBTQ+ are directly affected by this type of thinking. The question of sexual orientation is sociologically significant because people with this identity are subject to discrimination and stigmatization through disparate treatment, and may incur negative consequences in their pursuit of opportunity, or stereotypes that affect their education, their housing, their employment, and access to resources, treatment by authority figures.
I have identified the college as the study venue because we have a community of diversity, and it will be a great experience in gathering information from the immediate environment. Also, I have come through a study site known as lgbtcenters.org, which contains all the information about how their sexual orientation has affected their daily lives. Another essential site I would use in studying sexual orientation and how it has changed the gay community will be LGBT.Foundation, which offers great insight into how people with this identity cope with their daily challenges.
In my quest to find out more about the identity construction of the LGBT community, I will have to face a lot of blocks, and I anticipate to get challenges in doing interviews and any relevant documents. I think I will have to explain my research and how it is focused on how people respond to the issue of sexual orientation, depending on their immediate environment. I will also have to assure them that I am strictly conducting this study to help other people know the challenges they LGBTQ community faces regarding accepting their own sexual identities.
I have chosen school as the main venue of my research study, and this will involve interacting with students and staff from different departments. I anticipate going around the school, interviewing people about their approach to sexual orientation, and how they view the LGBTQ community identity. Interaction with people who identify with the identity in question will also play an integral part in gathering data on the emergence of identities and behaviors people develop out of sexual orientation.
I will be looking at how people whose identity am researching were able to come to terms with their sexual orientation in the face of discrimination and stigmatization. Through the interviews and observations, I will be able to find out the challenges they face and how they overcome them, which will help in understanding how the environment they grew in has influenced their approach to sexual orientation. Through the interviews, I will be able to come up with essential definitions of certain words, their norms, their way of thinking about sexual; orientation, how their sexual identities have impacted their lives, how their behavior has changed over time and how their immediate environment has reacted to their choices.
I will incorporate the use of interviews and observation, as stated in the course works to help in the gathering of relevant information about the identity of the subject in question. I will then go ahead and use qualitative data in my research, which will help in collecting data in written, audio, and use of websites and visual images. The third idea that I will use in my research will be the use of primary and secondary data that will be based on subjective and objective knowledge. These ideas will help me in coming up with the topic of interest, choose the appropriate site to gather information, define complex terms and incorporate new ones, give me an outline of collecting data and assist me in doing research using various methods. All these three ideas from the course work are vital in my study on how our immediate environment is constructed on how we approach the issues of sexual orientation.
