The Master And His Emissary by Iain McGilchrist
Choose one of the paper questions below (two options). For whichever you choose, you will be graded based on the following. -Topic is clearly stated and described, with any jargon terms defined. Topic is not overly broad. (example of overly broad topic: ‘functional differences between the left and right hemispheres’) -Global structure clarity (paragraph to paragraph): Paper addresses the various aspects of the assignment in a logical order -Local structure clarity (word to word; sentence to sentence): The information within each paragraph is presented in a logical order and without typos. -Interestingness and novelty of ideas presented in paper: The student read most/all of the MAHE and was engaged during reading, as evidenced by displays of insight in the paper. 1. Gazzaniga and McGilchrist cover many of the same topics in their books (for instance, how the corpus callosum transfers information between the two hemispheres). For your paper, choose one topic that both authors cover. [unique_solution]The topic has to include some type of cognitive/functional component. For instance, you can’t choose anatomical differences between the left and right hemispheres unless you talk about some type of cognitive function that is relevant to the anatomical differences. You will provide a desсrіption of the topic based on the information in the textbook. Then, describe that topic from McGilchrist’s perspective. Describe the ways, if any, in which McGilchrist’s perspective on the topic is different than in the textbook? McGilchrist’s perspective naturally is more opinionated/speculative than Gazzaniga’s in the textbook, so make sure to describe McGilchrist’s speculations regarding the topic you choose. When describing McGilchrist’s perspective, please make sure to include quotes with page numbers. Finally, reflect on McGilchrist’s perspective. Do you find McGilchrist’s argument compelling? Support your answer with a logical explanation. (4-6 pages) 2. McGilchrist admits that it is difficult to be an expert in all the fields that are discussed in MAHE. This means that there might be places where McGilchrist misrepresents a finding. I personally have found that McGilchrist cites a study in support of right hemisphere dominance for some cognitive ability, but when I looked up the original study, the patients were unilateral right hemisphere lesion patients only; there was no unilateral left hemisphere lesion group to which the right hemisphere patients were compared! Provided this methodological problem of the study, I think one of McGilchrist’s claims about hemispheric dominance is problematic. Choose one topic from MAHE (make sure you are clear about what your topic is). Find at least two behavioral studies (the studies you use have to present data; you cannot use review articles or purely theoretical articles) that McGilchrist cites when describing the topic. For each study, describe the method and findings in enough that you can evaluate whether the claims that McGilchrist makes based on those studies are justified. This will require that you reflect on the quality of those studies. You will need to provide quotes and page numbers for the claims that McGilchrist makes using the studies you describe. Make sure to cite the studies you describe and include a References section. (4-6 pages)
