The metrics of measuring learning and development change

The metrics of measuring learning and development change with time. For accuracy in measuring effectiveness start with the end in mind. That way, the measurement is not limited only to outputs but to every other contributing factor in organisations success. There was a time where learning was limited to a single department, and only a few people were accountable, but learning and development have evolved. It is recognised in its contribution to the organisations’ overall success; therefore, there is a paradigm shift in measurement parameters. Learning and development metrics that matter are:

Individual change: how has the training changed the said individual in the workplace and its reflection on the corporate goals and culture.

Skills attainment: measures the level of knowledge before and after the process. An effective L&D program equips the learner with skills applicable improves the ability to do tasks.

Workplace application: measures the use of what an individual learns in the workplace.

Team behavioural change: learning and development equips one to be more coherent in teamwork and influence the group dynamic.

Meeting goals and targets: the overall desire for L&D is to attain set goals with the new knowledge. Improvement should be noted three- nine months of post-learning.

Training and development are two sides of a coin. Different yet used simultaneously for the growth of both individuals and organisations. Coaching is a learning process for newly recruited employees, where they get to know the skill sets required for the job. Development is the training process for all employees within an organisation.

Training usually is a short term also known as probation period while development is a long term continuous process.

Training entails learning on the specific job while development involves knowledge and building competencies for opportunities in future. Similarly, training has limitations on the scope while development is career-oriented and covers a broader scope
