The Odyssey
Directions: Choose one of the following topics relating to The Odyssey to write your paper on. This is a formal essay, so be sure to introduce, support, and conclude your paper. The questions included are to serve as guides for your paper, but please include other information that you believe is relevant to your chosen topic. Keep in mind that this is an analysis paper, not a summary. – You must use at least 2 citations/quotes from the text in order to support your paper. (Worth 5 points.) Formatting: This paper will be between three and five pages, typed, Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double-spaced. Citations: This paper must be in your own words. If you use any sources (including the book) you must cite your sources and the citation must be typed, or you will lose points. You may use any citation format that you are familiar with, as long as you make sure to properly cite your paper. This includes a “Works Cited” section at the end of your paper (worth 5 points). – All papers are scanned with Vericite for plagiarism. Does it prove beneficial or hurtful to the characters when they are told a prophecy? Topic 3: The journey of Telemachos – Why does Telemachos go on a journey? Where does his journey lead him? Who helps him on his journey? Topic 4: The relationship of Odysseus and Penelope – Who are they? What is their relationship like? Are there any parallel relationships shown to us in the text? How does it end up? Topic 5: The role and attitude of the gods – What is the purpose of including the gods in the story? Do the gods influence events? Is this a good or a bad thing? Which of the gods helps which characters and which gods hinder the characters? Topic 6: The journey of Odysseus – Why does Odysseus find himself on an extended journey? Where does this journey lead him? What must happen before his journey can end?
