Advantages
The advantages of Social Media are some of the pragmatic effects brought by the use of social platforms such as Tweeter on teenagers: One of the benefits of Social media among youths is that it allows them to connect with their friends from different levels; for example, those who they meet at school, job, hospital. Teenagers have a better stay in touch. Social media provides a platform in which teens can easily get in touch with their peers, which they meet throughout their social life, without having to travel, for example, by air, water, or road to the physical places they stay.
Social media also help teenagers to form study groups to help them prosper in their academic work. The platforms such as Instagram, Tweeter, and Facebook that allow users to send photos and videos can be of more benefits to students when used appropriately. When teenagers from different parts of the continent mobilize and form a chat group in one of the platforms mentioned above, they are capable of exchanging ideas with each other and come up with scientific solutions to solve world problems. These groups can also be formed internally, which is within students of a particular school to enable them to remain in contact and also help those who were absent from school to get information on what was taught and also notes.
Disadvantages
The negative impact of social media on teenagers is the challenges that are brought by the Social media platform to teenagers. These factors include: Social Media leads to Addiction, which causes poor performance in school and also reduces the concentration of teenagers to more important things (Radovic. et al. 2017). Uncontrolled use of social media platforms such as Facebook led to internet addiction. We find that teenagers spend a lot of their time on social platforms giving less concentration on their academic work; these cause poor performance in schools, and some end up dropping out of school. Addiction also led to health problems such as prolonged use of devices such as mobile phones and laptops may cause eye problems due to the light produced by these devices.
It can also cause Suicide and Self-harm Content; social media platforms can lead to teenagers to commit suicide when they lack the attention they require. Teenagers can do anything to receive the attention they need as they compete with celebrities and other cliques in likes and comments on the platform (Barry et al. 2017). They will do self -harm activities such as excess piercing and tattoo to earn public attention, which may also cause health problems on an individual.
Conclusion
Social media should be discouraged among teenagers because it has several negative impacts on teenagers than the benefits. These impacts include; Addiction, poor performance in schools; it lowers self-esteem, it led to poor concentration, depression, and many other challenges that harm teenagers.
