The problem I have solved
My encounter with an injured feral cat ignited my desire to advocate for animal rights. I came across a feral kitten that had a bad cut on one of its legs. It was a wrecking scenario for me since I care about animals. As such, I caught the animal and decided to help it. However, most people (including my teacher) wanted me to throw the injured animal away. I declined and took the cat to a veterinarian. With a lot of care and patience, I was able to transform the unsociable feral cat to a friendly purring pet. People loved the cat, and he eventually got adopted by a family. This experience sparked hope and belief in me that I could voice for animal rights by pursuing political science. My love and compassion for animals grew stronger, driving me to start a non-governmental organization, the Mongolian Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO).
The ultimate goal of MAWO is to advocate for the provision of basic needs to sentient creatures, especially dogs and cats. The organization focuses on fighting against systemic mistreatment of animals, thus champions for animal justice. As such, my classmates and I became animal rights activists. Nonetheless, one of my friends told me that the organization would fail since most people in the region are not concerned about animals’ rights. This proved to be true since, in the first year of the organization, no one supported us. People looked at me as a child who could not spearhead the animal rights movement. People doubted if my organization would make any difference to their lives in society. I was, however, encouraged by the students volunteering for MAWO never to give up. As a result, we remained persistent in realizing the goals of MAWO of saving animals’ lives.
We initiated a wide spectrum of strategies to raise awareness of animal mistreatment as well as educate the public on how to provide the best care for animals. We conducted high school presentations to educate students on how to reduce the misery and suffering of animals. Moreover, we conducted demonstrations to increase public awareness of animals’ rights. This gave us an opportunity to educate the local population as well as give out the handout on animal care. Fortunately, our campaigns were successful, raising approximately $2,500 for animals requiring urgent help. Besides the donations, MAWO established a long-lasting partnership with a local veterinary hospital. Currently, we have saved about 310 cats and dogs from a life of fear and have been adopted in happy homes. The organization, therefore, is successfully realizing its goals in saving sentient creatures. MAWO has also played an instrumental role in transforming the society’s attitudes towards animals’ rights. In the end, the achievements of MAWO gives me a great sense of fulfillment and gratification in my life.
