Fried assumes that workers at work may happen to work for a few hours. This is because at the time when individuals get to work and get other distractions. He gives a scenario relating to a front office where staffs get to work in the morning. They start with other distractive activities (Mark et al., 2017). Fried places these activities, which may include a tea break or even a lunch break. With these distractions, the worker will come to the end of the day without having done the planned work for the day.

He assumes that not all workers have to be in the workplace in a period of given hours. He says that some people may work at different hour intervals. Fried also states that people may work through various conditions; some may work through a noisy environment while others prefer working in very silent environments. He appears to be a theory Y manager and not a theory X manager. Theory X manager is a manager who does not participate in work. These managers assume that their workers need to be pushed and forced to deliver efficient work. Theory Y managers are managers who are very participative in their work. They usually positively view their workers and uses a participative style to manage work (Mefford. 2017). Theory Y managers are motivating to their workers, and they layaways get a better outcome of work done by the workers. The reason is that the workers have a conducive working environment where they are happy, self-motivated, and are involved when it comes to decision making.

Fried thus appears to be a theory Y manager because he seems to be against the managers who are not participative. He is against the managers who may hold staff meetings, of which they are mostly absent, or they have their distractions. Fried explains of being participative in the workplace.

This is because in many workplaces, you find a lot of distractions here and there, and you end up not doing the work intended for the day. There are many distractions at work, of which some are some that he explains to them as useful distractions, and others are bad distractions. Useful distractions maybe from internet access and others that are helpful to the work being done. Fried explains that at the workplace, there might be the” M & M” that appears t be a bad or an involuntary distraction (Dowling). The M & M, meetings, and managers are distractions in the workplace. At workplaces, you might find regular meetings that hinder workers from meeting the targeted areas. The managers also interrupt the workers because they keep on checking whether everyone is doing the work.

This is because if in an organization there is introduced something like a no talk Thursday, people need to make consultations here and there. It is a good recommendation, but if hours are set for silence, and there is an urgent delivery required then it would be a failure because one has to consult to get ideas on how to do it. The recommendation about the use of passive communication means may also not work. The reason being that it is not all individuals may be using emails or messages in the workplace to communicate.

Workers may be having urgent messages they need to communicate with each other, and the best way to do it is by active communication. On his last recommendation about the cancellation of meetings to avoid interactions, it can be difficult for an organization to cancel meetings. Meetings are used as the primary communication avenues from the management to the workers. So these recommendations of Fried towards work cannot work in most sets.

The recommendations to deal with workplace distractions are; introducing rules and regulations at the workplace that govern workers’ working conditions. This can be either putting rules to stop them from walking around in a disorganized manner during work time. This will enable them to complete their daily tasks assigned to them on time.

They are coming up with specific days to hold meetings in the organization. This will help to reduce time wastage and promote time management skills in the workplace. Through this, the quality of work done by each individual will be pleasing to the management. When meetings are regularly done in an organization, the workers seem to be very distracted at times, and their work quality is becoming lower than it is expected.

Another recommendation could be urging workers to maintain silence when it comes to working business. This is a recommendation that can help widely to reduce distractions in the workplace by capturing the attention of the workers. A noisy environment happens to be so distractive to the workers, which lower their concentration skills. When a noise-free climate is established, individuals can complete their work on time.

Time management awareness could also be a recommendation in the workplace. Every individual can be advised to keep time correctly. If it is break time, the workers should be very punctual to avoid lateness as well as for the case of lunch breaks. When each of the workers is punctual, every one of them will have settled, and no one will be distracting, maybe in case of being late. This is a way that organizations can reduce distractions in the workplace.
