The Reflection of the Book, A Dog’s Purpose

Both amusing and touching at equal measures, W. Bruce Cameron in his book “A Dog’s Purpose” has managed to examine the main purposes of living through the protagonist who is a puppy. The puppy has taken us through its journey of life or rather lives by living under different settings which are symbolic to the fact that no matter the background of a human being, the purpose of life must be pursued to the latter. The young dog starts off as a pup in a stray litter and interacts with human at its first time in a hoarder’s yard. At this juncture he learns to interact with people in a friendly manner but unfortunately ends up suffering a sad fate after the dogs are deemed unadoptable. He reappears back later in a new litter and a new life as Bailer, a beloved pet of Ethan. He embarks on his most pivotal existence period and learns the satisfaction of living a purposeful life which gives him a joyful existence.

To achieve this joy, he not only adores Ethan but also risks his personal life to protect Ethan and which after several years make him feel happy that he has fulfilled his purposes. However, on his next setting as a female makes her realize that he had not achieved it all and has more to accomplish in order to achieve the purpose of living.

In order to successfully adapt this book into a film, the main theme of the movie, living a purposeful life must be fully demonstrated. The young dog should be presented in a desperate manner during its first appearance in the book as a pup and which should be easily relatable to the common life by many people who are selfish and only mind about themselves and less on other people. This can be demonstrated by the puppy being so desperate although at times comfort zone “dogs hoarder’s yard” because it’s alone under this setting and has not impacted on any other person’s life.

On the same setting, the dog should be presented during its efforts to achieve the purpose of life through its inability state to communicate to human beings in an understandable way. communication barrier should act as the main problem being faced by the dog in its attempt to achieve its purpose in life and which can put into conclusion that achieving life purpose is not a walk on the valley but will have ups and downs and which calls for dedication and determination as it is seen by the puppy when it meets its death still in pursuit for the purpose.

The puppy reappearance as Bailer should be ushered with joy and pleasure in order to demonstrate the joy of living a purposeful life which is characterized by mutual understanding and pure joy because of selflessness and togetherness. It should be demonstrated by the friendly environment established by Ethan and Bailer coexisting freely after the mutual understanding which sets in in their pursuit to live a purposeful life.

However, in order to demonstrate that living a purposeful life does not entail touching just a single soul but as many as possible, the third reincarnation of the young dog as a female should be ushered just like the first setting where the young dog is struggling to live a purposeful life which entails making other creatures around to be happy through helping them out in what they go through. In this setting as a female makes the young dog to realize that it had not achieved it all and had more to accomplish in order to achieve the purpose of living. This is because it had just touched the life of one person only and therefore not worthy to be considered as a purposeful life.

This setting should also be characterized by struggle and endless efforts of the young dog to help and establish mutual understanding among its population. This will be accompanied by risk taking to ensure that the rest of its population is safe and comfortable in their lives. This can only be depicted by much struggle and sacrifice during the initial stages of the setting and proceed by relieving the struggle slowly by slowly.

Putting keen observations on these settings as described above, the main theme of the book, “Purposeful life” will have been clearly demonstrated and be of much impact to the audience especially from the lessons conveyed by the young dog which include but not limited to living selfless life, ensuring mutual understanding, helping others out and sacrificing on behalf of others.
