The Rocco design

The renaissance period is associated with a culture and intellectual movement in European history that occurred approximately between 1400 and 1600. The reissuance period bridged the Middle Ages and the modern history, and it overlays with the Elizabethan, Early Modern, and Restoration periods depending on the country (Contributor, 2016). The period was marked by more cultural and intellectual than political changes, especially in countries such as Italy, England, France, and Germany. According to renaissance thinkers, the Middle Ages was marked by a cultural decline, and they targeted revitalizing it by re-accentuating philosophies and classical texts.

The Baroque period marked a major change in the religion in Rome, Italy, in the 16th century. The Baroque period marked the Counter-Reformation movement in Catholic Church, which was meant to respond to protestants led who claimed the church to be corrupt and abusive of power (“Baroque architecture | Definition, Characteristics, & Facts”, 2020). In the 16th century, the Catholic church focused on spending lavishly for the papacy, defending the doctrines that were rejected by protestants, and addressing the corruption issue internally. The Baroque marked a transformation of Rome to piety and asceticism that were characterized by new exploration of light and shadow, and dramatic intensity in the 1560s.

The Rocco design did not have much emphasis on religion because it was mostly used for decorating artifacts and not an expression of beliefs. The sculpture, painting, decorative arts, and interior design style originated from Paris in the 18th century (“Rococo | Definition, Art, Painting, & Characteristics,” n.d.). The rococo style intended to counter the Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles and his Baroque art that represented his reign. A good example is the Salom de Monsieur le Prince that was decorated by Jean Aubert in Petit Chateau at Chantilly in 1722. The second example of the French Rocco is the decoration that was done by Jean Aubert of the Hotel de Soubise in Paris, and it was completed in 1722.
