The Sexy Lie
The Sexy Lie is a talk by Ted about sexual objectification and beauty standards. According to (“Heldman: The Sexy Lie”), Ted explains that sex encompassment entails treating an individual like a sex object. She gives examples of sexual exploitation of women, especially in the media. Often, women expose their bodies in public magazines and media platforms thinking that by so doing, their standards rise. Unfortunately, Ted says that the act is degrading, and women must object to the idea by all means. Besides, Ted contends that unlike many people think, makeup does not raise individuals’ self-esteem. Instead, makeup conceals a person’s real look, acting like a big sexy lie, and at the end of the talk, Ted takes off her make up.
In my opinion, contemporary beauty standards are often contrary to those people praised in the past. Nowadays, among things, people focus more are the beautiful face, tiny waist, big booty, and flat tummy. Unfortunately, most of these goals are naturally unworkable. As a result, most women seek techniques that are sometimes overpriced and unsafe and could result in health complications later in life.
While feminists would view current beauty as pure genetic luck instead of skill, functional theorists would argue that contemporary beauty is created, and anyone can acquire the looks they wish. In America, action should be appropriated to change the representation of beauty. The operation will help to minimize sex objectification, especially in women. Consequently, women will learn to regard themselves as highly and embrace natural beauty.
Prohibiting featuring of super skinny models would change people’s perceptions regarding current beauty. Besides, the action would increase an individual’s self-esteem resulting in self -realization. Additionally, society would be healthier because beauty-based competition would reduce enhancing simplicity and acceptance. Importantly, people would focus on more critical agendas to improve their social and economic status instead of concentrating on beauty.
Currently, most people live their counterpart’s life. Looking at it from a positive viewpoint, imitating someone else would make one explore different aspects of life and gain different adaptive skills. On the contrary, one would lose their identity resulting in a lack of fulfillment. If I were born the opposite sex, life would be different because I would not have learned the social values and gender roles I have acquired. Besides, I would not focus more on physical beauty. Instead, I would channel my attention on life goals.
