A teacher should not leave their class unattended, mostly when there is a fight between students. By leaving the course, the teacher would be violating to fulfill their obligation to address and try resolving ethical issues. This is because a teacher must confront and take necessary action to resolve conflicts in the school community.
A teacher must never be alone in a private area with a student even though the discussion they are holding is confidential. Such an act would be a disrespect to the students’ rights and dignity. The code of ethics expects the teacher to interact with a student in an appropriate setting and with transparency (Klamm et al.). Additionally, the teacher is expected to respect the student by taking into consideration, student’s gender, age, socioeconomic context, and setting.
A teacher should call a student when necessary and insist that the parent be there during the phone call conversation. Failure to this, the teacher will be violating the code that talks about the teacher maintaining student’s confidentiality and trust while interacting with students appropriately within the acceptable limits. The teacher does this by upholding guardians’/ parents’ legal rights and requirements to talk about legitimate concerns that involve the student’s wellbeing.
It is recommended that a teacher does not drive a student home alone unless another adult accompanies them. According to the code of conduct, a teacher should establish an environment that is seen to promote the physical, intellectual, sexual, and emotional safety of all students. A teacher should not force against a student unless it essential to defend oneself or protect another student from being injured. This protects the teacher from violating teachers’ obligation to resolve ethical issues and to promote effective relationships. It is vital that a teacher works towards ensuring that the environment at the workplace is free of harassment.
The code of ethics discourages a teacher from changing the underwear of a young child unless another adult is present. In essence, this protects the educator from any accusations about the child’s welfare. Additionally, the educator will not be accused of touching the child inappropriately.
A teacher should not administer corporal punishment to, or strip such a student unless authorized and follows guidelines on corporal discipline (Klamm et al.,). This Educators’ code of conduct calls for teachers to resolve conflicts whenever possible, respectfully, and privately in accordance with the district policy. This enhances appropriate and effective relationships
The Educators’ code of ethics discourages teachers from receiving compensation for tutoring one of the students unless it is approved. This protects the teacher from claims that are accepting bribes from students. The code of ethics notes that a teacher should promote dignity and respect for the student by considering the implications of receiving gifts from students (Klamm et al.). The educator is likely to be fired.
As an educator, it is recommended that they keep receipts of disbursement and collection of school monies. This is important because it protects the teacher from accusations that they were involved in misappropriation of funds. The teacher has evidence of all the collections they made (Klamm et al.).
A teacher should not have a relationship with any of their students either in school activities or outside of school. Doing this may result in the student and the teacher not being objective and may risk a student’s well- being and perhaps reduce the teacher’s effectiveness. The teacher should acknowledge that there no situations that allow them to have a sexual or romantic relationship with the student (Klamm et al.).
A teacher should write down any question that the student is asking them outside of class hours, like during break time. This will help the teacher in defending themselves in case the student accuses the teacher of not answering the questions thoroughly. The code of ethics expects the teacher to have respectful and dignified conversions with the teacher that are free of any sexual violation (Klamm et al.).
An educator is expected to maintain a professional style with the student and not talk to them as their parents. This ensures that there is mutual respect between the two parties and that the teacher is independent and does not take sides in case of complaints.
