Substance abuse is a major social problem affecting society today. It affects not only micro levels only but also extends to macro levels where they affect community and nation in particular. Substance use is more characterized by individuals, especially the young population in high schools, college, and university levels. The high rate of substance use among adolescents is due to various motives resulting in drug abuse involvement. Drinking motives have been one major issue contributing to the increased rate of substance abuse among young individuals.
The substance abuse issue in society is addressed by various models that engage in the discussion concerning the topic. To begin with, the medical model addresses substance abuse as a disorder with varied effects and leading to mortality. According to the medical model, substance abuse, in most cases, starts at the adolescent stage that is accompanied by various changes. Due to increased brain functioning in adolescence stage, the young ones may involve themselves in drug abuse activities such as drinking alcohol or smoking. The public health model also addresses substance abuse as a social issue in society.According to the public health model, substance abuse is a disorder that threats the wellbeing of the public. On the other hand, the human services model addresses substance abuse as a disorder found to cause a lot of harm, primarily mental illness to addicted individuals.
In substance abuse treatment, individuals experience various obstacles that prevent services. The barriers include high treatment costs associated with the services.Often, the treatment of substance disorders is expensive, thus prevents some individuals from accessing the services. The barrier is preventable by accessing medical insurance to cover such diseases.Stigma is another barrier with services to individuals where one may fear the judgment from society. Individuals addicted to substance use usually fear how other individuals in the community will judge them upon rehabilitation decisions. Therefore, it’s necessary to educate society on the needs of rehab and highlight its benefits.
