The two sociological concepts identified include Functionalism and feminism.

Functionalism: describes the doctrine that enshrines what makes something a desire, thought, or based not on the internal constitution, although singly on its function or the particular role played especially on the cognitive system. The functionalism concept includes aspects such as norms and values. Norms explain the expected or typical behavior patterns linked to societies, social roles, or specific contexts. On the contrast, values include the primary and lasting beliefs and ideas concerning what is desired and not desired.

Society and culture are, in most cases, applied interchangeably, as they possess distinct meanings. Culture is explained as the shared beliefs and behaviors of individuals, whereas a society includes a group of persons who share a culture and community. The experience we have on cultural differences is impacted by our xenocentrism and ethnocentrism.  Cultural universals include traits or patterns that internationally common across all societies.  The family unit is an example of a cultural universal.

Functionalism is a key concept as it explores all aspects that form the society. It includes the functioning of society and the factors that make the society to be functional. The needs of all persons in society are met by the factors that comprise society. The concept of functionalism is key as it demonstrates how the society we live in remains balanced. The elements, including social norms and values, form an important part of my life and that of other individuals in society as it creates our personality (p. 30). When the social norms and values are followed properly, they ultimately frame use to become reliable individuals in society. This means that ignoring the social norms and values will only lead us to destroy the valuable life we possess.

Feminism: this includes the belief in economic, social as well as political equality of the genders. The patriarchy element of feminism describes a society that exhibits unequal power relations, especially between men and women. The women, in this case, are oppressed and disadvantage. The short story by Kali Fajardo-Anstine focuses on the lives of brown, indigenous, latinx, or both who include the women and the struggles they experience daily such as racism, poverty,  as well as addictions of various kinds (p. 34).

Feminism includes the belief that both men and women need to be given equal opportunities and rights. We typically, in a world, there is an observed wide gap between the sexes as they are far from equal. This amounts to considerable harm to both men and women. The primary idea of advocating for women’s rights is that men will not be subjected to the loss of their rights if women gain more. The benefit is that men will ultimately be allowed to work with their opposite gender. The feminism aspect is essential to society as it leads to societal transformation, such as greater access to education among women, the suffrage of the female gender, and attaining more equitable pay with the male gender. Besides, the concept is essential as it addresses the right of women in the society where they are allowed to make private choices and decisions regarding pregnancy, especially on the abortion aspect.
