Summary
Basically, learning is a process that involves several brain-based strategies meant for high student success. Over the years, the teachers have contributed to the improvement of education by launching theoretical and practical learning processes. One of the modern strategies to help students succeed in learning involves keeping a clear and concise record of what has been covered and completed. It acts like a file to record success and victory in learning and helps students to internalize what has been taught rather than forget after a while. Second, students can demonstrate what they have learned by enjoyed the capacity to choose their goal according to personal interest through what is known as the brain’s circuit reward.
On the other hand, there are teacher-based strategies which have proven to be of great help in sharpening students’ mind. The first one is to employ the use of a spaced learning strategy where the teacher helps students in creating studying calendars and plans for tackling small chunks of class content and previous work since the human brain is prone to forgetfulness. Lastly, teachers may emphasize the positive talk and growth mindset, which helps to acquire optimism towards learning. This kind of talk motivates students to internalize the content no matter how hard it might be.
In her book Teaching Yourself How to Learn, Saundra McGuire proposes some of the useful strategies which, when put in action, may spearhead student’s performance. Briefly, the author introduces teachers on the use of metacognition and Bloom’s Taxonomy, among other strategies, which strengthens the essence of learning and enhances intellectual growth among students. Time management is an extensive strategy, as discussed in chapter nine of the book. McGuire affirms that ‘survey exams before starting, budget your time and read directs carefully’97. According to the author, time budgeting involves planning what to do at any particular time. It helps students to cover all the content on time and refurbishes the ability of the brain to remember what was included in a particular moment in class.
Elsewhere, McGuire samples some activities which she refers to as “…the activities that frequently serve as a time drain for students” 99. According to the author, successful learning is the one where both the student and the teachers should be in a position to avoid any activity that would distract the learning process. Students should be frequent visitors to campus offices that affirm with the students learning. During occasions such as revising for examinations, which calls for private studies, students are advised to find a peaceful and cool place to boost their concentration for easy content grasping. Some such learning distractors may refer to loud music and the use of social media networking sites in the study room.
Lastly, the book Teaching Yourself How to Learn, emphasizes on the proper application and utilization of the strategies already suggested in the previous chapters. McGuire 110 asserts, “…read the strategies and have fun..” which is discussed in section. Notably, several strategies may be applied towards a particular course, but the chances are that not of them may work out and bear the expected fruits. It is advisable to work with what is working at the moment. Teachers should have the capacity to differentiate the applicable and non-applicable learning strategies to enable the students to navigate through the syllabus with ease. Conclusively, students should have an open mindset to accept academic growth and overcome any form of drawbacks in the learning process.
