Thinking Trans Lyn
After reading and watching the Trans lives, experiences and their concerns leaves me very surprised. The story of Lyslie Barrett makes one wonder how the Transgender people survive in this world full of selfishness. Lyslie’s family, unlike many families with transgender people, supports him fully until he completes his transition. He acknowledges that his mother has done a lot through supporting him (mark 2:15). Therefore, I am surprised that this group only needs everyone’s support for them to go through their transition successfully. They require the family’s understanding and full support because it is not their wish to be Transgender.
In my opinion, these readings challenge my previous understanding of the Trans people as before I came to an agreement correctly who they were; I used to discriminate them. My knowledge of the Trans people was influenced by the stereotypes the media was propagating. However, I have come to understand that they are ordinary people. Especially the Trans women, they are discriminated to the extent of the media hyper sexualizing. I am happy that they have stood up and now are fighting for their feminine rights. According to Serano, Trans Woman Manifesto aims at ending the deriding, dehumanizing and scapegoating of the Trans women worldwide, (p. 11). My thinking is that the feminists should consider these manifestos carefully and stop the Trans women’s discrimination, oppression and dismissal. This week’s readings are motivating to the community as a whole. The Trans people are ordinary people and have the rights to enjoy life as either a Trans woman or a Trans Man. The issue of discriminating and oppressing this group should be stopped to let them live a free life. The feminists should be real and stop being “Pseudofeminists” and fight for, especially the Trans women group to stop the society from oppressing them.
