Introduction

Whip Whitaker (played by Denzel Washington) is identified as a commuter airline pilot. While he was on a flight from Orlando to Atlanta, something happens to the aircraft, and the plane starts to fly erratically. The plane crashes as a result of mechanical, but as the pilot, he saves almost everyone who is currently on board. Whip while he goes to the hospital, his friend from the airline union is quick to tell him he needs a lawyer just in case his toxic blood levels are measured as he will test positive for alcohol and cocaine. The union lawyer Hugh Lang tells Whip in the event he was convicted due to the high toxicity in his blood levels, then there is a possibility he would have to deal with life imprisonment. Thus, Hugh advises him to ensure in the next few days as the investigation is ongoing to ensure he maintains to be sober at all times. However, Whip is identified to be struggling to keep being sober as he is an alcoholic and a drug addict.

Three individuals who enable Whip drug abuse

Ken Co-pilot

Whips’ excessive use of both alcohol and cocaine identified to affect his capability to explore his gift of being an excellent pilot. In the military, pilots often prefer to use stimulants to allow them to improve on their overall performance. The first enabler of Whip behavior is Ken, his co-pilot. Ken is aware of Whip’s current predicament and preference to consume a lot of alcohol while he is on the cockpit. However, Ken being the co-pilot opts to be silent and take in the instructions once Whip has stabilized the plan. For example, while taking off, Whip struggles to balance the plane and informed Ken to make a call to the traffic control of the changes route. After the way has been established, Whip then goes to address the passengers personally and makes an apology for the rough ride. The then pours three mini-vodka bottles into the bottle of juice and consumes the content.

Once he has taken the mixture, he returns to the cockpit and naps. In this scenario, Ken enabled Whip to continue with his behavior of excessive drinking to the point Whip considered it okay to fall asleep while at the cockpit instead of being awake and offer assistance to Ken in the event of any incidences reported during the flight.

Similarly, Whip opted to use a different route when taking off the aircraft without first consulting the air traffic control on the best-recommended course. But given he was already intoxicated, he opted to make his own decisions and inform the air traffic later of his choice. Whip put his crew and passengers in harm’s way and can be critiqued to be one of the reasons why the plane developed complications very fast. Whip opted to make his decisions hastily with no consultation. Additionally, when NTSB questioned Ken, he chose to information on the Current Whip state when he returned to the pilot seat after he stabilized the aircraft. It was his responsibility to inform the investigator’s Whip was already intoxicated before the crash occurred. However, he opted not to tell the investigation offers of these incidences to shield his friend from any form of discipline.

Harling Mays, his friend

After the crash occurs, Whip wakes up in the hospital and soon meets with acquaintance Harling Mays (John Goodman). Despite Whip being at the hospital, Harling manages to sneak in cigarettes and other drugs to Whip for him to enjoy while at the hospital. Whip admission to the hospital was the first stage to allow him to quit the consumption of the drugs. However, the preference for him to listen to his friend Harling makes him continue with his drug and alcohol addiction with ease despite him being on medicinal drugs that require an individual to be off drugs and other substance abuse. Harling helps Whip to break a few hospital rules regarding the consumption of cigarettes as he directs Whip to a staircase where he can take his cigarettes with no disturbance. This is an enabling behavior to Whip, and he gains the confidence even to try other drugs he is brought by his new friend Harling.

As soon as Whip is released from the hospital, Harling takes him from the hospital through the back door, and this allows Whip to avoid any questions by the media and goes to Harling’s father’s old farmhouse. The decision to take Whip to his father’s farmhouse instead of advocating that he seeks needed treatment and help is an enabling behavior to Whip to ensure he got a space to continue with his addictive behavior with little or no questions asked. While at the farm, Whip is still well stocked with the needed drugs and alcohol, which he finds form the Harling father store. It is ironic how Harling being Whip friends who they meet at the hospital instead of helping him get off alcohol, and other hard drugs are giving him enough stock to ensure he is well supplied? Therefore, it can be argued if Whip did not meet up with Harling. At the same time, at the hospital then he would have gained an opportunity to clean up and ensure that he gets a better chance to deal with his underlying issues such as divorce and some of his dear friends and colleagues who died on the under plane clash Katerina.

Hugh Lang Lawyer

Hugh Lang being a union lawyer enables Whips drinking and drug abuse behaviour. In the movie there is general evidence of preference to use alcohol and drug abuse to ensure the pilots are able to perform at their peak. However, according to the air traffic, the pilots are required to be at their sober states at all times when they report for duty in their respective stations. Thus Hugh is seemingly aware of the current trend that occurs with many pilots in the airline, and this may potentially not be the first case; there are suspected several alcohol and drug abuse among the airline staff that is on the route. But it is paramount to ensure all the staff at the plains are capable of discharging their services with ease and providing they are at their best conduct. Hugh was aware of Whip blood test on toxicity levels and helped Whip to discard the drug tests as he was informed as soon as the tests are presented in court, then his friend Whips would have to be locked up for life. Therefore, in this scenario, Hugh acted in the faith of the airline so that the airline would not be questioned over why they promoted to have drug addict pilots operate in the company. Also, pilots that identified to have addiction issues of alcohol and drug abuse ought not to be allowed to fly any aircraft until they are fully recovered. The preference to ensure the pilots are addicts is to enable them to function at their best and not put the passengers and crew at any risk. Moreover, the preference to help Whip to throw away the drug tests did not help Whip to be sober up; instead, as soon as he left the hospital and accompanied his friend at the old farmhouse, Whip continued to abuse drugs as much as possible with no limitations whatsoever.

Also, Hugh influences Ken not to share much of the Current Whip state of mind and mannerisms before the accident with NTSB. Additionally, before Whip makes an appearance to the board, the was currently questioning him, Hugh gets the opportunity to prepare him and ensure he can answer the questions based on the guidelines that had been provided. However, when Whip is left in the room to prep, he reaches on the liquor cabinet of alcohol and drinks several bottles. Lastly, during the interview, when Whip is questioned who possibly took the vodka whose bottles were found on the trash at first, he hesitates then later makes a full admission. He has an alcohol problem, and he was willing to deal with consequences. Hugh strives to make corrections of the messages done by Whip, but the damage is beyond repair as Whips confession rules the day.

Drug Addiction and Management

The movie ‘Flight by Denzel Washington’ is one of the live-action films that have been produced to raise awareness on society on issues of drug abuse and addiction. Characters and groups of individuals are people within social class that is highly respected. The use of high flying characters is a good strategy that the producer uses to portray misconceptions about drug abuse—most of the societies, especially Americans, associate drug abuse to members of gangs and celebrities. The narrative gets twisted on how the author of the movie as a masterpiece manages to show how modern lifestyle can and promote drug abuse.

The first approach that could have been put in place in the institutional management strategy. International Civil Aviation Organization in 1995 published a manual that gives guidelines on the policy of managing drug and substance abuse and use in the industry. The manual makes it a responsibility to manage of aviation industry to ensure they have a strategy to contain problematic substance use. Problematic substance use, as defined in the manual, refers to any application that extends from consumption or handling. The problematic substance is associated with compromising the health of the user to significant levels while on duty or using their facility. Besides, any use can lead to social and legal problems, compromised mental conditions, and endangers the lives of others, and that of the user should be managed at the institution level. At current, the airline seems to be lenient with the pilots being allowed to consume alcohol and other drugs. At the same time, at work, but he should be condoned instead, strict rules and regulations need to be observed to ensure no incidence is associated with pilots making error judgments and putting their crew and passengers at risk with their immediate decisions done.

The firm had a corporate responsibility to ensure drug use and abuse among those inboard and staff is regulated through operation strategy. Passengers and crew, including the pilot, should have highly restricted access and the right to use drugs while on duty. To avoid anticipated occurrence, checks should have been established to ensure even the employees do not consume kinds of stuff not offered by the firm while on flight. The second approach that could have been employed relates to the welfare of the employees. The employees and customer relations determine the performance of the firm. Aviation manual advocates for employee enhancement through education. Firms should always hold regular sessions that address issues facing members of society since their workforce comprise the immediate community. By educating the workforce, those with such problems would be motivated to seek assistance since the firm shows goodwill to offer support. Employees who seek aid should not be victimized since it would deter others. Drug use and management seminars would also encourage other members of staff to offer assistance to those affected or report extreme cases to management. For example, in the movie, Ken needed to be able to communicate to the direct supervisor and inform Whip of the current alcohol abuse he was in and not hide if the decisions did could potentially interfere with the safety of the plan.

Clients also have a social responsibility to report indecent cases they observe among other customers and members of staff. By giving feedback, management would be informed on issues that occur along the journey. The use of alcohol and drugs by the pilot is a significant and fatal concern that should be addressed as a matter of urgency. The pilot put at risk the lives of people on board and can harm the reputation of the firm. Besides, identification, rehabilitation, and treatment programs should also be provided. Firms and society, in general, should establish an institution that can offer assistance to people like Flight captain. Drug addiction led to a waste of resources like highly experienced human resources and thus should be managed through a positive approach. Pilots should be closely monitored to ensure they observe professional ethos and ethics. Firms can conduct the biochemical test to members of staff to ensure they adhere to operation guidelines. Employees who violate such provisions and regulations can be identified earlier, and the situation contained before it can explore the extreme case as observed. Members of the society and close family members should also be involved in helping affected individuals while out of duty.

In summary, the movie Flight gives an insight into how some issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, if they are not well monitored, can result in disastrous effects. Additionally, the workforce needs to address any hindering personal issues that may bar them from engaging in their current work at 100 percent efficiency. When workers are comfortable working at their workstations, they deliver the best results to the company with ease, and consumers enjoy excellent services offered. Proper management practices are likely to provide the companies with needed guidelines to guarantee a safe and healthy working environment.
