Understanding Leadership Styles

  • Describe the factors that will influence the choice of leadership styles or behaviors in workplace situations.

In the usual workplace environment different management styles are used to depending on the changes in each situation. A good leader uses a combination of management styles to ensure proper running of the work place. There are several factors which determine the management style in the work place and this include the task or situation, the team of workers and their preparedness to work, the team behavior as well as the leaders each with their own abilities. The environment of the workplace as well as the situation has a major influence on the management style. For instance, in a production line  workers have to follow routines and this require more directions while in a design company there is more flexibility and the creation of the proper environment to stimulate creativity.

The team of workers and their readiness for the task has a major influence on the management style. Researchers, Hershey and Blanchard quantified the readiness of the team and created a scale whereby, R1 is the lower end of the scale where worker have no abilities, will or skill needed to perform the task whereas R4 is the upper end of the scale whereby workers have great skill, will and ability to perform the task. A worker on R1 needs much more direction and instruction in order to complete the task which is normally the case with new employees as well as apprentices. Workers on the R4 side need much less hands on management and they could be allowed to work on their own.

Behavior of the team of workers or even individual workers varies from those who are unmotivated and lazy on one side to those workers who are highly motivated and active on the other side. According to the McGregor theory these two sets of workers represents extremes which are known as X and Y. Ultimately the management style will be different for either an X or Y team of workers.

Strict authoritarian managers are also referred to as autocratic leaders who manage the work place without consulting their team of workers and they normally take up all responsibilities on their own. Such leaders yield a lot of control and power over their team of workers. This kind of management style is suitable for work situations with very tight budgets and deadlines were decisions are required to be made quickly and accurately. Such types of leaders should be in charge of workers on who are X and R1.

Democratic leaders on the other have the final say but they are team oriented and regularly consult their team members in order to obtain their highly valued constructive input. Such team leaders encourage their team members to be more creative and take upon themselves more responsibilities. The type of leadership leads to highly motivated team of workers who feel that their opinion is valued and they take pleasure in performing their duties. The teams of workers best suited to work under such leaders are those who are Y and R4.

  • Explain why these leadership styles or behaviors are likely to have a positive or negative effect of individual and group behavior.

In my opinion the situational style of leadership is more positive since the leader adapts their leadership style according the type of workers and this ensures that work is done properly. Often this kind of leadership style leads to the creation of positive relationships between the leader and their team members. The focus of the situational leadership is on the leader-follower relationship whereby the focus in on providing direction then sharing, coaching, making decisions through allowing the team members to come up with solutions for problems which are identified by the leader.

Certain types of leadership behavior can have a positive impact on the team members or the team itself. For instance, if leaders reward their team members on achieving of targets this will ultimately have a positive impact on the team. Normally there are boundaries which are set between the leadership and their subordinates. According to me, the situational leadership has ne major disadvantage in that it diverts the focus of the leader from the long-term strategies.

Understand leadership Qualities and review Own leadership Qualities and potential

2.1 Assess own leadership behaviors and potentials in the context of a particular leadership model own organization’s working practice and culture using feedback from others.

In my work place my role is that of a senior coordinator in charge of facilitation. Each day I am required to use my skills as a leader to manage tasks as well as workers in order to keep the activities of the facility running smoothly. I apply the situational leadership style in my workplace. Sometimes I have to adapt my leadership style to given situation. For instance, when we have a new employee I use a more selling leadership style so as to help them adapt and learn.

According to feedback from my team members, my situational leadership style is also participatory. However, I try to delegate as much as possible. Some of my attributes as a leader according to feedback from my team is that I am able to multi task, resolve conflict and problems, motivate my team, being friendly and a good listener. These are normally not the attributes of a situational leader. My position requires that I understand all the leadership styles and apply them accordingly.

2.2 Describe appropriate actions to enhance own leadership behavior in the context or the particular leadership model.

Considering my situational leadership style, there are several ways in which I can enhance my behavior as a leader. For instance in need to need to develop my identity and awareness which is required so as to lead a team of experts. It would be wise if I could find a role model to learn from. This should be a person I highly respect and someone whose style of leadership I admire. If the identified role model agrees to be my mentor, my skills as a leader will improve greatly.

Another way of enhancing my leadership behavior is to be myself. This involved doing things my own way and setting high standards for me. By having clear objectives I will become a better leader. My strategic long-term goals should be my focus and no the small issues which I may encounter along the way. In conclusion I can enhance my skill as a leader by standing by my principles and maintaining a high level of integrity.
