University Charter School (UCS)
University Charter School (UCS) is one of the most famous public charter schools in recent years. This institution was opened in August of 2018. When the school opened, it only enrolled 300 learners. More than half of these learners were African American, and others were white. This made media outlets describe the school as the pioneer de facto racially integrated institution in Sumter County. When it was established, it mainly served Pre-K through to grade 8. The institution added one grade each year until it attained the status of a PK-12 institution. University Charter School is located within the campus of the West Alabama University. This university is a rural higher education institution that was mainly established to meet the needs of West Alabama scholars.
Before the early 1970s, learning institutions in Sumter County were racially segregated by law. Even though the schools within Sumter county were given orders to de facto bring together all schools by the federal judiciary, white families opted to move their kids to segregation institutions like Sumter Academy immediately. This left a majority of public schools with black pupils. Even some staff in the segregation institutions like the Sumter Academy thought that the idea of separating learners in the society was going to crumble and fade away. This came to pass, and the Sumter Academy closed in 2017, leading to the establishment of schools like the University Charter School.
The mission of UCS is to be a rural institution that is diverse and cultivates independent thoughts by promoting the development of character and civic responsibility. The institution is committed to preparing learners for success through discovering their learning pathways in a multi-faceted curriculum. Its vision entails becoming a collaborative rural institution that produces adaptable learners who recognize the significance of cooperation across society.
