using time in our daily activities
From ancient times, the concept of time has always fascinated scholars and great scientists. We use time in our daily activities, but surprisingly most people do not know how to explain what time is. Time is often defined as a duration of the rotation of the earth around the sun, and its axis. Some people believe time is a concept dependent on our mind like Henri Bergson, a renowned French philosopher, “suggested that real-time, which he called “duration,” exists merely in our consciousness” (Bunnag). However, others believe “that time exists independent of us” and can still exist beyond our extinction, and is real(Mendez). Sir Newtown agrees that time is genuine when he defines time as “an absolute entity not relative to or depending on others and therefore, mathematically true and objective” (Bunnag). Time is still a complex concept being explored.
The first source I used was from Bunnag, who expresses a neutral tone in his arguments. He shows that time is both dependant and independent to specific groups of people, depending on their perspective. Bunnang uses Bergson, a renowned French philosopher, to show how a particular group of people perceive time as merely a fantasy that exists in our minds. Bergson says, “time… exists merely in our consciousness” (Bunnang) to portray the concept of time living as a fantasy. Bunnang then goes on to show that some people view time as real and independent of human beings by quoting Newton that “an absolute entity not relative to or depending on others and therefore, mathematically true and objective” (Bunnang). Bunnang’s double-sided Argument shows his neutral stand on the concept of time.
Mendez, another writer, however, agrees with Bunnang on the concept that time is real and can exist independently of human beings. Mendez says that “that time exists independent of us.” The agreement between the two writers on time being an independent concept from the human mind makes it easier to synthesis both sources. Both writers also acknowledge the works of great scientists like Newton, making synthesizing their work easy. The writers’ arguments on the concept of time give me evidence by mentioning the works of great scientists in solving the time concept puzzle. Their discussion on time is essential for my research on the end run because they emphasize that it more about the perspective of an individual and the arguments put across.
