Video games and Strategic Thinking
Thousands of parents everyday complain about their kids being hooked up on videogames, but not all games are bad. In some cases, video games help develop strategic thinking in children, teens and even adults. The audience of interest are teachers as well as parents who might want to know whether playing video games is helpful to the students. It consists of adults aged between 25 to 60 years. Most of them are males of varying occupations including Information Technology professionals, engineers, teachers, soldiers, and mathematicians. It is important to focus on this group since it is made up of people with influence in the community. Having them understand the impact of video games on people’s way of thinking is important as it helps them influence other society members. According to me, the target group will respond more to logic appeals. This is because most of them are professionals who like to base their arguments on logic rather than on emotions.
The topic of interest is whether playing video games helps practice strategic thinking. Since the time of their invention, video games have been very popular among children and adults. Their popularity has ever been increasing as PlayStation develops. In most communities, playing video games has been viewed as something for teens. It is even seen as inappropriate in some settings. Most of the opponents of video games believe that playing video games is quite addictive and leads to violence among children and young adults. With the development of more realistic games, many of which contain a significant amount of violence, the revolution against them have been on the increase. Playing such kind of video games influences the gamer including violent behaviors, health issues, and addiction. The debate on the impact of video games on people’ way of thinking has been longstanding.
Playing video games has both the beneficial and the disadvantageous side of it. Looking into the disadvantages associated with it, playing video games is addictive, leads to violent behaviors, and leads to health issues. For instance, excessive playing of video games is addictive and leads to vision problems, headaches, and dizziness. Moreover, the fact that most games involve violence encourages the development of violent behaviors among the players.
My stance is that playing video games is beneficial to most people in the community. Research shows that playing games enhances creative and strategic thinking. This argument is important to the group I’m addressing since they all need strategic thinking in their day to day operations. Military organizations, for instance, makes use of war games to help soldiers learn distinct strategies on the battlefield. Three games are currently being used as computer-based training, those are “Virtual Reality Combat Training”, “Full Spectrum Warrior”, and “Tactical Iraqi”. Medical organizations, also, use video games to assist future healthcare providers to discover diseases’ states and develop diagnostic skills based on various symptom’s presentation. “Prognosis” is the game more commonly used, it provides clinical cases with pictorial representations of physical exams This allows students to practice risk free and become better in their field of study.
My audience will more likely respond to logic appeals rather than emotional ones. The target audience is composed of professionals who will need facts to agree with my stance. I will use scientific articles, experiments, surveys and possibly conduct interviews around my community. In conclusion, making sure that they recognize gaming can be helpful, just with a little bit of supervision.
