 Voting Theory

Dear Congressman,

I am writing to you regarding the upcoming general elections in the United States of America. It puzzles me that to date, the presidential election is still decided by a few electors rather than the popular vote. The Electoral College system is imperfect and has always been from the onset. On five different occasions in the history of a presidential election, a candidate has won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College vote, which begs the question is the United States of America the democratic country it claims to be.

The Electoral College system was born of compromise. The creators of the system met in a convention in Philadelphia. The delegates could not agree between the congress picking the president and a populous democratic vote deciding the election. The delegates settled on the Electoral College system.

The voting theory, which is also known as the choice theory, allows the people to decide their leaders. Voting will enable people with contradictory opinions to come together and choose between several options. In a democratic country, compromise goes the majority way. However, this is not a guaranteed case in the United States presidential elections. The Electoral College vote has much more significant power than the populous vote.

In my opinion, the democratic populous vote system is the most appropriate mechanism of deciding the president. Some people believe that with the populous vote, presidential candidates will only campaign in the big and densely populated states ignoring the minority areas. However, democracy always applies ‘the winner to take all’ rule.  It means that eventually, the votes of the minority in all states are effectively discarded. Moreover, the Electoral College system only promotes a two-party state which does not reflect the will of the Americans.

I appeal to you to use look at the voting theory and champion reforms in the Electoral College system. The American people should be allowed to vote for their president directly. I believe the populous vote system favors today’s American politics.
