Water Pollution

“We never know the worth of water until the well is dry”. The words of Thomas Fuller are a correct impression that environmental conservatists get when they try to understand why people pollute the environment. The issue of environmental pollution is a factor that has proven to be a challenge in contemporary society. Following the high levels of industrialization, there has been created a need for humanity to step up and care for the environment. Other than air pollution, water pollution is the second toughest problem that people have continued to face in modern days. Many countries have a water problem, and getting a reliable and clean water supply system has proven to be a problem. Rwanda, for instance, has projected a rise in the increased rates of water pollution in the recent past. Ideally, evaluating the concept of water pollution in Rwanda and its significant causes, as well as the effects, contribute mainly to the process of understanding how to manage the problem.

One of the primary causes of water pollution that has been identified in contemporary society, specifically Rwanda, is dumping toxic wastes in the water bodies. Arguably, most of the citizens of this country have developed a habit of dumping waste in the rivers, which are the primary sources of water that are supplied in most parts of the country. Sewages, as well as residues from the industries, is the major pollutant that most water bodies in this country face. Research has also identified accidental oil spillage as a factor that contributes to the increasing waste disposal in water bodies. According to Singh, “Sometimes pollution that enters the environment in one place affects hundreds or even thousands of miles away”. There is yet a silent pollutant that most people seem not to realize, but it impacts hugely on the water bodies. Arguably, the extensive use of herbicides and pesticides, as well as other chemical substances that enhance the soil, continuously wash into the water bodies. When the same water is consumed, people suffer from water-related illnesses.

The problem of water pollution is later seen among the increased number of ill people crowding the hospitals.  Ideally, the perfect way of solving this problem is by eliminating it from its roots. Arguably, water pollution is caused by the carelessness of the people living within a specific location. As such, these are the same people who can help solve the problem of water pollution. Research has pointed out the environmental conservatism towards the treatment of sewage waste so that if they happen to land on the water bodies, they can be safe from any harmful things. Singh points out that “Nutrient concentrations in streams and rivers have been strongly correlated with human land use and disturbance gradients”. Additionally, septic tanks should be created to dump waste, and, in these tanks, there should be a possibility of sorting the waste from the most harmful to the less toxic. The prevention of the acid rain should be minimized so that the depletion of the ozone layer is controlled. The chemical compound that causes the formation of acid rain should be prevented since once the rain lands on the water, it is not easy to clean it up. Similarly, the acid rain automatically kills aquatic life.

Some of the barriers that have been identified and pinned to be the limiting factor of solving the problem of water pollution once and for all is poor communication. Arguably, most of these agencies do not communicate effectively towards creating, instead establishing an excellent platform in which they can enlighten the public of the most effective ways of solving the problem of water pollution once and for all. The national academic press informs that “Leaving the inefficiencies of the status quo for the uncertainties and risks of a new approach may be difficult for all and nearly impossible for some”. Arguably, these are the main challenges that continually paralyze the attempts of these agencies as well as environmental activists to establish the solution to water pollution.

Conclusively, the problem of water pollution is a significant challenge in contemporary society. Apart from killing the aquatic animals and plants, the infection is also affecting humanity in ways that could not be avoided. For instance, the people who consume contaminated water become since and, as such, find it hard to cope. Ins countries where water pollution is a significant problem, the cost of living is high since water is sold at high prices.
