What are the different components of the human immune system?

The human immune system is responsible for the protection of the internal organs of the body from the harmful effects of the pathogens that remain suspended in the air. These pathogens can enter the body at any time and can cause potential harm to the body. However, generally, the body has two kinds of immune responses depending on the types of pathogens entering the body. The presence of the different components of the immune system helps the different parts of the body to combat the harmful effects of these pathogens in the body.

Here is a brief introduction of all these essential components of the human immune system:

  • White blood cells

One of the most useful and necessary elements of the human immune system includes the white blood cells. These are mainly synthesized in the bone marrow and are an essential part of the lymphatic system. They are present throughout the body due to the flow of blood. These are the vital components that produce the different kinds of antibodies in responses to the pathogens in the body. For example, the body can produce acetylcholinesterase antibody in the case of the diseases named myasthenia gravis.

  • Bone marrow

Bone marrow is the soft spongy tissue that remains present within the interior portions of our bones. It is capable of producing red blood cells, which are useful for the transportation of essential nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. The bone marrow also synthesizes the white blood cells and the platelets, which are vital as they help the body to fight against the infections of the antigens.

  • Thymus

The thymus is also an essential part of the immune system as it is capable of producing the progenitor cells, which ultimately matures into the T-cells. The body actively uses the T-cells to fight against the cancerous cells present in the body. These cells are so crucial for the wellbeing of the body that, in many instances, these are donated to the people in need.

  • Lymphatic system

The lymphatic system also plays a vital role in providing immunity to the body. It is the first line of the defense supplied by the body in response to the entry of the harmful pathogens or the antigens in the body.

Apart from these organs, there are certain kinds of cells which are active components of the human immune system. Some of these cells are natural killer cells, memory B cells, plasma B cells, T-cells, regulatory cells, mast cells, etc. The natural killer cells are a part of the innate immune system and hence provide the first line of defense to the body. The memory cells help the body to remember the appropriate immune responses in accordance with the presence of different pathogens in the body. To know more about such antibodies like acetylcholinesterase antibody, immune responses, and other components of the human immune system, make sure to consult the experts.
