In Guatemala, hip-hop has taken a similar step where the native locals have adopted the use of hip-hop as a way of expressing their concerns with the government of the day. The need to pass down their culture to the younger generation has prompted hip-hop musicians to dig deeper into their pockets to achieve this critical step. After listening to this indigenous popular music, I was able to grasp the torment and pain the minorities were going through because of powerful officials in the government who were formulating laws that will continue to put the poor minority communities down. The No Address Band explores the idea of oppression from the police who racially profile them and harass without any regard that they are citizens too and, more importantly, the original inhabitants of the land. The We have survived the title of the song speaks all about the atrocities the minority grouped has passed for decades and what they have gone through to survive.

The song relates to the Australian social and political context in terms of the long histories of injustices that the native communities have undergone under the laws of the white ruler. The wealthy dominated government has resulted in criminalizing and blaming the youth from impoverished areas for their situations. The theme of “We have survived “speaks thousands of words to the minorities in the community, and if they have been able to overcome all these challenges, there is a bright future ahead.
