Where do you fall within these titles? What aspects of followership do you see in yourself currently?
I have always thought of myself as being a better support system to leadership than being the actual leader. I mostly find myself anxious about making decisions that others depend on for direction on essential matters. However, when there is someone else who gives guidance, I perform better at following their directives and achieving set goals. Before I came across the difference between leadership and followership, I thought of myself as being a weak leader. Learning about followership has enabled me to accept better my strength in being a loyal, ardent, and diligent follower of people in leadership positions.
How can you use this knowledge to develop as a leader?
The importance of knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses is in using the strengths to develop and improve on the weaknesses. Personal development comes hand in hand with the acknowledgment of one’s current and desired positions. I know I am good at being a follower. In this position, I am a keen observer of the small details that feed into big decisions. Leaders depend on these details but may not have the time to find and observe them. Using my skills as a follower, I can develop the leadership skills I lack by observing how leaders use the information and expertise provided by followers.. What is the role of both in healthcare?
Some of the duties of a leader are to direct and delegate. They need people who will take up the directions offered and delegated responsibilities. Both leaders and followers are, therefore, crucial in healthcare. Both positions need to be sound for the organization to run as it should. Leaders in healthcare bear the vision of the organization and head the team towards the achievement of organizational goals. It is, however, essential to have a follower team that is just as dedicated, because followers are the actual wheels on which the organization rolls towards its goals. A cooperative effort between good leaders and followers spells success for the organization. Laxity in either of them will slow down the pace towards organizational goal achievement.
