Why Canada Should Not Legalize Some Drugs

Legalization of drugs such as marijuana in Canada will be a national disaster. The federal government’s plan is to legalize marijuana. There is a deadly crisis that is underway, although the government is still adamant in legalizing marijuana and making it freely available in Canada. This looming crisis is nothing but an opioid crisis (Fischer et al, 2016). If the federal government has to look for sources of revenue for the government, then I believe that legalizing marijuana is not the solution. There a million of untapped resources in Canada that can as well act the sources of government revenue. Legalizing drugs like marijuana is meant to risk the innocent lives of the Canadian people. Furthermore, some vendors in Canada are already marketing marijuana openly in anticipation of the legalization. Regretfully, the federal government cannot resist the song of revenue and so health and success take the back bench. Legalizing marijuana in Canada will do the country more harm than good. Most population especially the youth will engage in the marketing of such drugs. For any country which wishes to be recognized in future as economic icons, the safety and education of the youths are mandatory (Bligh & Robinson, 2010). The youths are the backbone of any country. For the period when the country waited for the legalization of such drugs like marijuana, more than 10,000 youths in Upper Canada alone, become addicted to the drug and joined gang squads. Clearly, we can see Canada attracting its own national disaster. Canada will plunge into a state of insecurity which even the government will control due to these upcoming gangs and increased criminal activities (Fischer et al, 2016). To avoid national disasters such as insecurity, the federal government should abolish the legalization of such drugs and prohibit its marketing. The fact that marijuana has some associated health benefits, it should not be misunderstood by the government to an extent of wanting to legalize it. Same Canada is in support of detention of prominent drug lords who own millions of acres under marijuana cultivation. Like the quote says and I quote “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” (Bligh & Robinson, 2010)

Legalization of some drugs in Canada is a threat to the country’s economy. The sale of marijuana within Canada will not improve the economic status in Canada, instead, it will worsen the economy. First and foremost, the legalization of marijuana in Canada will cause fracas with the international communities which still stick to the societal norms and ethics. These outside countries may decide to boycott products from Canada since it will have been rendered as a reckless nation which does not care about the welfare of its citizens but rather busy with making business (Hajizadeh, 2016). This would imply that the locally manufactured products including those drugs will just be consumed locally raising the level of its consumption. Moreover, the use of such substances is bound to cause untold sufferings to the locals. In terms of impaired judgments, such drugs may possibly lead to the occurrence of many road accidents causing more deaths (Fischer et al, 2016). The strength of an economy of any nation lies in the productivity of its population. With these increasing number of deaths on the roads, the country’s population especially the productive population is diminishing becoming a threat to the economy. Additionally, some of these drugs are associated with adverse health effects. This is because when the federal government legalizes such drugs, they fail to put in place appropriate remedial measures and consequences of abusing such drugs. Most people thus abuse these drugs and their health conditions deteriorate hence, they are no longer productive in the economy.

Legalization of drugs like marijuana as an alternative drug due to its health-related benefits would be a threat to employment in Canada. Most of the debates on the legalization of drugs like cannabis just beat around the bush of their health benefits. As such happens, the government of Canada is forgetting that the very diseases cannabis is purported to treat have companies manufacturing drugs for their cure. Legalizing marijuana will cause instability in the companies. As matter of fact, most people would prefer cannabis if legalized as a health remedy since it’s cheap and readily affordable as seen recently when such debates began. Cannabis is readily obtained raw as a plant form the plantations and this means, its consumption will not have to wait for the industrial processes (Maté, 2010). Moreover, the myths surrounding the use of marijuana say the drug is better is used directly from the plants when not dry. If marijuana is legalized, the industrial sector is likely to undergo challenges reacted to marketing. Low marketing for drugs would mean less working personnel in the companies. As a result, a good number of the Canadian population will face unemployment. Looking at it from the angle of the active population in the production process, the legalization of such drugs is likely to cause unemployment. As a matter of fact, those who abuse these drugs in Canada prefer lazing around to going for work. Most of them are youths who like lazing around in the streets looking for what they can prey on. Even if they were once employees of whichever sector, drug abuse especially when legalized comes with a type of laziness which can render an individual jobless. Thomas Edison says and I quote “there is no substitute for hard work.” Ever adult must strive to be economically independent and contribute towards the growth of an economy (Maté, 2010).

Legalizing cannabis will expose even the unborn babies to danger. Arguably, marijuana is even more toxic than cigarette smoke. If it is legalized, Canada will record as many users of marijuana. These users will be hit by devastating lung problems at ages younger than smokers. This research has established that the regular users hit by these lung problems are twenty years younger than the smokers (Marchant, 2002). Meaning even small amounts of marijuana can lead to temporary sterility. The effects on the unborn include mental abnormalities, birth defects, and increased chances of getting leukemia in children. Certain drugs inclusive of marijuana decimates people’s lives. If the government persist on legalizing marijuana and some other drugs, it will go down in history that the federal governing is not keen on the upcoming generation. In fact, there is even no need for the federal government to come up with the comprehensive medical covers for expectant mothers if, on the table, they are planning to legalize drugs like marijuana. It will be a null vector–type of operation. You make and destroy yourself resulting in zero effect. It is better to prevent a disease than curing it. No wonder Desiderius Erasmus said, “Prevention is better than cure.” (Marchant, 2002) The federal government must look forward to stopping legalizing some of these drugs they have in plan to legalize, otherwise, it will be a different Canada form the one we know.
