Why People are attracted toward Characters they despise

In contemporary television and video environment, it is evident there are emerging trends. There is a trend that is both intriguing and concerning. There has been a significant shift in the shows from characters that are likable to those who are not likable (Flanagin, 1). There is an increasing presentation of characters that are morally corrupt, unhinged, unsavory and creepy. There has been a shift from the traditionally presented characters who were morally sound protagonists. What is surprising is that people continue to be attracted to these characters. It is thus important to assess why people are attracted to these characters. Characters with bad behavior likely tend to have some unique characteristics that make them appealing to the audience.

Why People are attracted toward Characters they despise

People are often attracted to characters they despise (Carpenter, 1). Jake Flanagan indicates that people enjoy bad character traits because it lets them feel better about themselves. It also helps in connecting with the character. If a TV show has one or many of its characters who are lazy, it is evident that this behavior will connect with other individuals who are also lazy. Equally, when a show has a highly anti-Christian, Muslim or any other religion, it will also attract viewers who highly despise such religions.

Bad characters create a sought of suspense in a film. In many videos, there is always a protagonist and an antagonist. It is through such predispositions that the movie can progress as the cast members strive to solve the problem. It is through the existence of such a character in the film that a star emerges in the film. If the actors have angel-like characteristics and acts in line with the norms in society, there are high chances that not many people would end up watching those films. This implies that if there is no drama in the show, very few people would end up watching the show.

Some of the actors who have received controversial following are Ob-Gyn. She is among the first South Asian –American characters to anchor sit.com. In her presentations on TV, she is seen to love gossiping and shows limited recognition of religion beyond its aesthetic value. Her spirituality extends very little beyond conventional beliefs and only seems to be amused by the animal gods of the Hindu. When other presenters are presenting the need for climate change, she seems to take the opposite side. As a person who does not follow gender-based conventions, her views attracts a high number of people who are always eager to hear what else controversial she is going to say in the show.

Why are we attracted to Dramatic Figures?

According to Flanigan, female characters tend to remain 2 dimensional showing either positive or negative views yet they should demonstrate complications that cross between the good and the bad. The TV shows have a high following since the actions are not limited to the time constraints evident in the movies. The unlikeable characters in such shows tend to remain unpredictable. They embody attitudes and character that the views sometimes enjoys and in other times they despise them. They provide contrasts in the day to day lives of individuals. Many characters on the TV especially men are people who seem to demonstrate a life of struggle between the ordinary and the extraordinary (Lotz, 76). Many people want to be extraordinary. Human beings tend to live normal lives yet they are attracted to living extraordinary lives. It is these extraordinary lives that attract people towards characters on the TV who seems to be controversial. For instance, in a show where characters seem to be in love yet one acts in an unpredictable manner and one that indicates that the relationship may not thrive, people are attracted as they seek to understand whether the relationship will thrive or not. It is such controversial elements that end to cement the relationship between the

On TV there are many ways that characters can be controversial and they are mainly the 3Bs which are behavior, belonging and beliefs. People try to justify or negate controversial behaviors and beliefs something that creates a buzz.

In the TV, the science of creating controversial content and characters is on the rise. The strategy is nevertheless dumb as it tends to demonstrate such actors as merely seeking attention. I still advocate the creation of the right form of controversial content. In brand shows and publications, the use of highly controversial figures and topics high controversy may end up making the show lose some of the viewers. It is thus not always or everyone who is attracted to controversial characters.

In contemporary shows, there is a presentation of weird characters including murderers and scoundrels. In a normal sense, such characters cannot be said to be real heroes in society. It is thus surprising that the viewers continue to be attracted to these people. Nevertheless, there are several reasons that can explain such an attraction. The themes of human nature and psychology are Nevertheless the most employed in explaining this development. The presentation of such characters reminds people of their dark side even after siding with the villain (Lotz, 8). Equally, many actors are usually sexually attractive. People will continue being attracted to such individuals even when they demonstrate the wrong behavior. In spite of this, it becomes difficult to draw the line between glorification and healthy fascination. It is difficult to explain why the audience would still be attracted to a serial killer dating an innocent woman. Nevertheless, such a killer may get the attention of the audience as they seek to know whether the killer will harm the person. There are multiple instances wherein Stranger Things; Billy Hargrove was introduced in season two as a new addition to the rest of the crew. He was established as a bad guy. He was often abusive to his step-sister; he is also racists towards Lucas and tried to kill some children. In spite of these developments, people still find him to be attractive. To make the issue even more confusing, the promotion of season three was highly inclined towards him

The attraction of people to serial killer characters is that such individuals are often charming. They are also attractive physically something that draws the lovers that they kill towards them. The psychology of the murders and other bad guys is a source of fascination for a high number of people. It is thus evident that there are multiple reasons as to why people are getting attracted to individuals who demonstrate weird characters. The attraction indicates that people have different preferences regarding characters and their attractiveness.

Among some people, some of their strongest attributes are their ability to attract bad people/. Such bad people often feel threatened by the strengths exhibited in good people and enjoy when the good characters are manipulated by the bad characters. People’s strengths may become their weaknesses depending on the context in which they are being employed. The problem of attraction to the wrong characters equally stems from how people are brought up. People tend to respond to such compelling people depending on how they learned to act during their childhood years. For instance, if a character is angry to another character, one may have the view that it is the other character that has hurt him thus justifying violence and anger towards him. On TV people are often attracted to characters that exhibit such behaviors.

In psychology, it is evident that people are often attracted to individuals who exhibit what they believe in or how they act. It is evident that for a womanizer, he is likely to be attracted to characters on the film or television show that has no regard for one man one woman relationship and will tend to glorify characters that tend to exhibit behavior that is in line with their characters. Reckless people are also likely to be attracted to characters who are players in a relationship, having multiple partners.

In the area of real-life relationships, it is difficult to understand why some women are attracted to bad boys. Such women tend to find men who have dark personalities as attractive. More men exhibit that dark triad as compared to women. They tend to exhibit psychopathic behavior, narcissism, and Machiavelli’s behavior. Psychopaths demonstrate erratic social behavior as well as inter personality hospitality. While these are negative elements that are likely to put off people from getting attracted to them, such psychopaths tend to exhibit deceit and superficial charm that tends to attract people. It is evident that while characters with bad behavior may be presented as manipulators, they also tend to demonstrate charm that they use against their victims. The implication is that bad characters also tend to have some compelling appeal that pulls people towards them (Mehta, 67). This explanation could offer an insight as to why people are getting attracted to individuals exhibiting negative behavior on television. It is an emerging trend that has attracted a high number of viewers to television shows

In contemporary culture and media, it is evident that individuals are attracted to controversy. In some cases, the media employ controversy with the aim of triggering social panic. There is a difference between media and moral panic. Moral panic refers to a sense of fear which is spread by some people or characters in media that some evil is threatening the society. Raising moral concerns may result in following a character on television who otherwise demonstrates negative behavior. It is thus important for the show or film producers to create characters with such odd behavior something that attracts their audience. It is important to note that in media, attracting the masses is very important as it increases the chances of viewership of the presentations and increased chances that firms will place adverts on television shows that tend to have a high level of viewers (Mantoan and Sara, 88). In a cultural setting, it is thus evident that there is an attraction towards indiv8iuduals exhibiting bad behavior as individuals are always looking forward to their next move or actions as they are highly unpredictable individuals, creating some sort of suspense among people.

Conclusion

Based on the above review of the issue of attraction of individuals towards bad characters, it is evident that such attraction is prevalent in media. People tend to follow the actions of bad boys and other bad characters. Some of the reasons offered for such attraction is that such characters create suspense on their next move, increasing the desire to follow them. Equally, while they may have bad traits such as being murders, they have to compliment characters such as being cunning and funny, something that attracts viewers. In televisions and movies, it is evident that controversy significantly enhances the appeal of such characters to the audience.
