Women have lower mortality rates than men, longer life expectancy, greater mobility and are over-represented in health statistics

While we will all die eventually, investigation directed by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown men have a shorter life span or expectancy than women. According to the CDC, in 2003, one million men died, and this made 80% of the total number of people that died in that year. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released statists and differences in the mortality rate variance between males and females. Based on their research a boy born in 2019 will live for approximately 70 years and a girl born on the same day will live for around 76 years. As seen, there is an age gap of 6 years. Various factors come in play that causes women to have a higher life span than men in society.  A combination of genetics and cultural factors leads to men dying earlier than women.

Alcoholism in Men

According to WHO, men emerge into alcohol that the women. The number of men abusing and becoming solely dependent on alcohol is higher than the number of women. Research by the U.S. Clinical and Experimental Institute shows that males drink more times and heavier than females. Their statics shows that in a year, men drink an average of 20 liters while the women are at approximately 7.92 liters. Such drinking habits among the males causes an increased level in liver cirrhosis. This illness reduces life expectancy by approximately 0.25 years. This pronounced gender difference in the prevalence of alcohol use causes an increased death of men in comparison to the women. According to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), in the U.S., around 16.1 million people die from alcohol disorder, 10 million of these people are men, while 6.1 are women. This is a 2:1 ratio (Holmila & Raitasalo, 2005). Thus, there is a difference in alcohol consumption according to gender, and therefore women possess a high life expectancy than men.

Interpersonal Violence (Homicides and Murder)

Men are more likely to engage in interpersonal violence than women. Such violence has been estimated to reduce life expectancy by about 0.26 years in men. Statics show that men are more likely. Thus, men are four times likely to die from murder, manslaughter, and homicides than women (Vicary & Fraley, 2010). In the street gang and crimes, most criminals are men who kill their fellow men. This can be explained by the increased rate of male youth consuming drugs and thus resulting in fraud. Therefore, crime is not only a major factor in reducing life expectancy in men but so is the consumption of drug and substance abuse. This causes the mortality rate of men to be higher than women.

Dangerous Occupations of Men

Men tend to engage in hazardous jobs and occupations than women. Taking an example, a man can be a coal miner. This means that every day he is exposed to dangerous fumes and chemicals. Additionally, in the process of mining, they make their way into coal tunnels that are kilometers deep. This is not only a tiresome job but is also endangering the man’s life. There have been cases where these tunnels collapse, leaving people dead. For example, in 1996, the Gretley coal mine disaster was experienced where the 150-meter-deep coal tunnel collapsed and killed four casualties. It’s not a coincidence that all these victims happened to be male in their mid-30s. Women, on the other hand, are involved in less risky tasks such as caring for children at home, selling groceries in the market, or being house helps. Thus, female life expectancy is high compared to men due to the less dangerous occupations they perform daily (Torre, 2018).

Men Prone to Diseases

As earlier indicated, men are engaging in disaster situations. These working environments may often lead to the development of infections. Taking our earlier example of a coal miner due to the smoke and large volumes of dust inhaled while burning the mineral, this leads to the development of lung cancer. Skin disease may also be associated with the mining processes. Compared to the women who work in mostly favorable environments, men tend to suffer from disease after a prolonged working period in such unhealthy environments. Additionally, explosives used may also lead to brain damage, thus developing mental illness in men. Therefore, women have a higher mortality rate compared to men.

Higher Immunity (Case study of Cutting for Stone)

Research shows females have a stronger immune system than males. This is clearly outlined by the characters of the “Cutting stone” Genet, who was a female infected a Marion who was a male with Hepatitis after their engagement in sexual intercourse. Instead, Marion comes close to death, while Genet does not show any signs of dying. This shows that women can possess a higher résistance to end, causing illnesses. She has lived with the disease for over seven years, but when Marion is infected, be barley survives for a year. Additionally, despite many people dying in the ship where sister Mary praise was traveling in, there is no case where she falls ill (Faunce, 2009). Thus, women have a reduced mortality rate than women.

In conclusion, it’s undebatable that men die twice as faster as women. Various factors come into play in the cause of this occurrence. They include; stronger immune system in women, risky jobs men engage in, men are likely to die from murder and a likelihood of excessive alcohol consumption. Despite these factors, we can change this phenomenon by ensuring men maintain a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle.
