Workplace and Family Conflicts
Workplace Scenario
The workplace conflict I would love to express is the disagreement among student leaders on how the president of the council is to be elected. Whereas some felt like it was unfair to have the president voted in by only the elected leaders, others thought that the current system of election was appropriate because it aided in preventing extreme political tensions within the school. For the former group, the voting in of the president needed to be done by all students because they felt that sometimes the elected leaders are not a true reflection of the students’ preferences, and letting the students select their supreme leader was the ultimate demonstration of democracy. The source f conflict, in this case, was interpersonal because it involved two groups divided over the matter at hand and claiming opposite opinions on the issue at hand. In the end, however, the conflict was resolved by negotiation and discussion. The members of the student union discussed amongst themselves the most appropriate way to take. One group chose to compromise after the debate, and it was agreed that the president would be elected by members of the union and not all students. Family Scenario
The family conflict scenario I would like to present about is the disagreement among my parents concerning the sharing of domestic duties. The main issue at hand was a complaint from mom that after busy days dad would not help with the household responsibilities, yet both of them contribute to the family income. However, following an open-minded talk between them, it was agreed that each evening, they both would be involved in the household duties. The conflict was primarily interpersonal and was resolved by amicable negotiation.
These conflicts are a perfect show of the Impact of communication patterns in conflict resolution (Jandt 213). Excellent communication and rapport among the conflicting parties allow the involved people, to put their differences aside, to overlook all strains and discuss the conflict objectively until an agreement is attained. This is happening in the two conflict scenarios presented herein. Understanding that conflict will certainly happen also helps instill in people an attitude of accepting disputes when they arise and attempting to resolve them (Jandt 219). It has been noted here, as Madalina (807) states, that communication plays a central role in conflict magenta. When parties communicate well, conflict resolution is more straightforward.
