World Climate Change

Actions speak louder than words. Much has been talked on the menaces of climate change without evident actions being taken towards it. In recent years there has been an increase in carbon dioxide emission to our environment; most of it from fossil fuels in developed countries. Climate change due to these emissions has been the most prominent challenge the world has been facing in the recent decade. It is well evident that no country is immune to the dire impacts of this epidemic. Therefore, India has delved into talks in the Conference of Party (COP) on the strategies it intends to put in play to reduce the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Padmanabha, 2019). Therefore, India has laid down goals concerning reducing the GHG that impacts climate change.

One of the primary goals of India’s strategic goal of reducing these emissions is through the International Solar Alliance. India and France have taken the pivotal step in establishing an alliance that focusses on revolutionizing the approach to the climatic change. India agreed to commit to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 33-35% by the year 2030. This is according to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). Besides, India also promised 2.5-3 billion tonnes of CO2 reduction by using non-fossil fuel sources as power; 40% of the country’s power capacity. So far, India is working toward achieving these goals (Goswami, 2019). However, challenges are anticipated in every step of any success; India is not left behind in encountering difficulties in its journey toward better climate change.

An effective response to climate change necessitates reforming agriculture, navigating the global politics, and reducing coal-dependency. For India to successfully make progress in addressing climate change, it should handle both mitigation and adaptation processes. For example, it should be able to consider handling other complex challenges such as the Amazon fires. Therefore, India will experience difficulties in reaching it set policies on their quest to limit the global average temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius; considering that it is the fourth-largest greenhouse gas emitter (Padmanabhan, 2019). India is also in a tight position in reducing its coal dependency in the attempt to shift to renewable energy. The country centrally depends on coal for its energy production. This question its goal of displacing cola for the costly renewable energy (Somanathan E. and Somanathan Rohini, 2019). Therefore, replacing coal energy is a tough challenge, almost impossible for India to entirely turn to renewable energy.

During the UN Climate Change in Paris Agreement summit, 1965 parties came together to agree on transforming climate change. The major agreements were limiting warming to 1.5-2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels, foster climate resilience, increase the adaptability to adverse effects of climate change, low greenhouse gas emissions that safeguard food production, working towards finance flows consistency for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development (NDC, 2019). Each country should outline and communicate their Nationally Determined Contributions to determine these terms are achievable. The countries are to pursue mitigation measures focusing on achieving the objectives. The countries also agreed on adopting renewable energy and displacing the non-renewable sources of energy such as coal in order to obtain 1.5 to 2 degrees C.

India pledged to reduces its greenhouse gas emission intensity by 33-35% under 2005 levels by the year 2030. The country also pledged 2.5-3 billion tonnes of CO2 reduction by using non-fossil fuel sources as power; 40% of the country’s power capacity (Goswami, 2019). The Intended Nationally Determined Contributions play essential roles in climate change by communicating their changes to the NDC hence more transparency. So far, most of the Parties of the Paris Agreement have shifted to more stringent targets and making their commitment to the agreement clearer. As a result, successful reports have been made in honoring this agreement. Short-term goals were projected to be achieved by 2020. Therefore, most of the countries have worked toward their attaining their goals. For example, Morocco has installed solar power and photovoltaic power plants in most areas of its boundaries, thus nearly displacing it the non-renewable source of energy (Lewin, 2018). Therefore, we are close to attaining the short-term goals of the Paris Agreement. I think India, my country, should invest more in transforming from coal to renewable sources of energy and put its citizens’ health at heart.
