Area of interest.
I chose 9th Grade English Grammar as my preferred test area of interest. I have tested the following areas in Grammar; parts of speech, grammar rules, and general language knowledge. This is a formative test that has been designed to determine if the learners have grasped what they were taught in class. The test is also intended to measure the progress of teaching and learning techniques to assess the effectiveness of the goals and objectives set.
Education objectives.
By the end of the Grade nine English course, the learner should be able;
- To efficiently and fluently read and speak the English language. By learning properties of English phonetics, morphology, and syntax, the learner will understand and use types of words, for example, synonyms, homophones, minimal pairs, among others. Content areas; phonetics, morphology syntax.
- To acquire a vast vocabulary and understanding of Grammar and linguistic knowledge conventions for reading, writing, and speaking. Therefore, the learner will understand and use a variety of vocabularies, discern spelling mistakes and be able to apply standard English conventions in day-to-day activities. Content areas grammar in reading and writing, Vocabularies.
- To learn and be able to apply grammatical rules and conventions. For example, first the use of active voice, for instance, the Subject-Verb-Object agreement in sentences. Second, linking of ideas by using conjunctions. Third, the use of simple present tense, simple past tense, among other tenses. These grammatical rules, among others, will be handy for the use of the English language in speech and writing. Content areas; application of Grammatical rules.
- To learn and apply the knowledge about parts of speech. The learner should be able to form new words and allocate them to their specific parts of speech, for example, Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, and their respective forms. Content areas; parts of speech, grammatical rules.

Items.
Multiple-choice; questions 1-12
True/False questions; 13-17
Matching; question 18
Short answer questions 19-30
I selected the above types of test items because this is a formative test meant to evaluate and assess if the learning and teaching skills used in the classroom are appropriately working for the learners’ benefit. Therefore, this is a quick test. Also, the test items I chose are appropriate for standard English assessment procedures. Therefore, the test is ideal for assessing if the learner has been able to gain knowledge and is in a position to apply it. The tests are mixed in terms of simplicity and complexity; therefore, the learners will be able to go through all questions efficiently. The limitation of my test structure is that it covered a wide variety of knowledge resembling a summative test; however, it will be used to assess the readiness of the learner to proceed to the next level. The test results will help the teacher adjust his/her teaching techniques and objectives to ensure that all learners are catered.
Test administration.
This test is to be administered in an examination setup. It is an individual work test that will be done within one hour thirty minutes. The subject teacher will administer the test; this will help him/her evaluate the test validity by assessing the face validity (facial expressions of the learners) during and after the test duration. Therefore, establish if the learners have well grasped the content by assessing their facial expressions; if a student smiles on completion of test; then the test was favorable; but if they frown, then the test was challenging.
