MANAGEMENT
For organizations to run effectively, they require a management body in the steering wheel. There are three formal definitions of management. Firstly, management is defined as a function of managing or conducting supervision within organization operations. Secondly, Management is formally defined as the role of using various strategies to accomplish a certain goal in a company; and lastly, Management is defined as collective bodies that focus on managing and directing an organization.
The definition that I choose as the most important definition of management is the use of various strategies to accomplish certain goals of the organization. The use of various strategies to solve business problems is important because strategies help determine the future path of a business. Further, strategies are important because they help in finding out the opportunities a business has in the market place, and the strengths a business could use to exploit the opportunities available.
Mintzberg’s in his study of management came up with various findings of the manager’s routine work. The findings were on the role of managers in organizations. In his research, Mintzberg found out that there are three roles of a manager in a business. They include; Interpersonal role, Informational role, and decisional role.
In the interpersonal role, the manager’s function as the figureheads in a business, they are the ones accountable for everything. In the interpersonal role, the managers are the ones who create the link between the business and the outside world, they are the liaison. Further, in the informational role, the managers are the ones who monitor the flow of information in the company; they disseminate information to the outside world and act as the spokesperson of their subordinates. In the decision role managers function as the entrepreneurs, negotiators and disturbance helpers of the businesses they head.
Since Mintzbergs study in 1960, technology and social media platforms have changed the roles of managers in various ways. Firstly technology has increased access to information to the subordinates and the outside world as well; as a result of information originating from managers flow faster to the targeted recipients. Further, technology has made it easier for subordinates to coordinate with managers more efficiently to achieve organizational goals; this is through innovations and creativity on the methods of doing business. Additionally, Social media has pulled managers to engage in various views on the platforms as they endeavor to accomplish companies’ goals.
Also, there are two overarching views about the manager’s work Historical perspective and contemporary perspective. Historical perspective has three viewpoints, a view originating from Max weber who championed the idea of bureaucracy, Fredrick Taylor who brought in the management theory perspective and Fredrick Taylor who brought in the concept of a scientific management approach.
The contemporary theory of management takes into account human behavior and environmental factors. For example, the contingency view is based on decisions being made based on unique factors. Managers may respond differently to the same decision because of the difference in the surrounding factors. Another contemporary theory view is the system perspective. The system perspective includes factors of input, transformation, and output in the company manufacturing process.
In conclusion, the points of management theories are applied in the production of goods, employee relations, and customer relations. Application of management theory viewpoints enables organizations departments to function seamlessly. Further applications of management theories enable organization managers to be consistently effective in the day to day activities.
