Technology and health issues

Technology and Hearing Loss

It is common to find people, and especially the youth spend most of their time using iPods or headphones. While it may leave one excited and make one dance out their way on the streets, this may have severe effects on the ears. Continuous use of earbuds may lead to a hearing loss or some ringing in the ears. It is almost impossible for the sensitive hair cells that are located in the inner parts of the ear to regrow the moment they are destroyed. It has been found out that approximately 26 million Americans in the 20 to 69 age bracket have a lowered ability to listen to sounds of high frequency since they have often been exposed to loud music. It is estimated that almost 20% of Americans between the ages of 12 to 19 years have heard a problem connected with a hearing loss. The numbers continue to rise yearly, and this may be associated with an increasing use of earbuds.

Evaluate the solutions

Turn the volume of the iPod or headphone down. The only sure test to this problem is to ask the person sitting next if they hear the music from the headphones or earbuds. In case the sound of the music can be heard, then one should know that the music from the device is severely loud to destroy the ears. Secondly, minimize such exposure. A few minutes of being subjected to high sounds may lead to an ear damage. However, even more, mild noise encountered daily may cause damage. An hour of exposure daily to the noise of the earbuds at a moderate level of four may create permanent damage, thereby leading to a critical hearing loss.

Technology and Vision issues

Spending a lot of time before any screen may contribute to several issues, some being health, psychological, and social welfare-related. The following are the health problems and an evaluation of the ideas on how to prevent or treat them. A multitude of these visual problems linked to severe screen time entailing things like blurred vision, eyestrain, and dry eyes is usually said to be a “computer vision syndrome”.

Solutions

The most basic remedy may be, remember to blink so often because a number of the times when people are using computers, they concentrate on the screens and thus do not remember to blink as required. Otherwise, using artificial tears may as well help solve the problem. Any person who continuously uses a computer screen should ensure that the conditions in the workspace are optimal. One should ensure that the computer is in an area with sufficient lighting and little glare. Actually, the screen should be positioned at a considerably far distance in front of the eyes. Besides, a user should be watchful that there are no air sources close to the working desk, which may make the eyes dry. Finally, a gentle massage for the muscles covering the eyes may typically assist in dealing with strain and or fatigue.
