She is first exhibited as an illiterate character who has to learn how to read. She was at first disappointed with her classroom challenges, including the inability to read and write. She took up the challenge and strived relentlessly to improve her writing and reading with the hope that she will grow to become someone respectable.
She gets the desire to read and write not because of the pressure in school but because of her increased passion for books. Liesel was regularly involved in a gang that was involved in stealing books, yet her only obsession was in stealing books. She did not care much about the type of books she found but was ready to grasp knowledge from any book that she found.
She is obsessed with books everywhere that she goes since books enable her to communicate with the living and the dead. The use of stories in books further acts as a way to her salvation. She finds refuge in books, and they, therefore, act to cool her both in good times and in difficulties.
The greatest challenge that she finds is the transition from an illiterate girl to a literate girl. She previously was not conversant with big words, but she now has to understand big words, understand them, and learn their practicability. She mainly reads one book written by Max, which she learns will help her and improve her understanding.
The Max book enables Liesel to understand how words are powerful and how they are used. She reads the book to one of the groups in the basement, as she gets the assumption that it may be used to calm them. The book, which described how Adolf Hitler used oratory words to confuse the German people, but a young girl emerges and confronts him with powerful words and compassion.
Liesel, on his way to Dachau, finds Max and feels desperate after which she takes one of the books at the library of Ilsa and tears it as she is wondering what good words are. Ilsa, who is the owner of the library, gives her a book and motivates her to write one. Liesel displays her confusion at the end of the book, where she mentioned that she had loved words and hated them in equal measures, but exhibits a belief that she had done them justice. Her insinuations at the tail end are a revelation of how her deep understanding of words and her resilience to write the right words.
