Some of the topics people do not expect to see in the market are; books that talk about racism, violence, sexuality, and many other topics that are not considered to be in a child’s literature. Children are considered vulnerable, and this is why parents try to protect the child as much as possible. Every parent would not buy their children a book talking about racism, sexuality, violence, and many other topics that are considered not to be meant for children. Some of the reasons why books get banned are because of political and religious reasons. Some individuals believe that they have to protect children from cursing, insensitive racial books, and morally offensive literature. Some of the literature that has been banned in the market is, “The Red Badge of Courage,” which was banned because of depicting war using graphics and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky because it has content that describes sexual behavior, alcohol, and drug use. Napoli explains that these are the things children need to talk about. Some of the individuals who challenge these books are the parents, school board members, individuals, and some other groups. For a book to be considered offensive, it depends on the community banning it. Different societies have different sets of rules and values; they believe children should not break. And many think children should not learn about sex, violence, and even racism so early. This is not something to hide, it is the world we live in, and when we are banning books that talk about things we do not want children to read, behaviors show them the same things. Certain things happen to children that they fail to understand, and some blame themselves for such things happening to them. It is essential to start preparing for certain things s early as possible to avoid damaging experiences when they face them. We need to make sure children know how to protect themselves from certain threatening events, and this cannot be achieved by making them absorb books that tell them life is all rosy. When children turn out to be bullies in schools, parents fail to understand why they are bullying their peers because they believe they have groomed their children the right way. What they do not realize is that these children bully others because they do not understand them and think they are confident because it is their fault. Providing children with books that talk about racism will make them know what others go through or what they go through themselves and that it is not their fault; certain things are happening.

Children who suffer rape blame themselves, and some end up committing suicide because they believe it is their fault such things happened to them and that they are dirty; thus, the only way is to end their lives or wallow in self-pity. Banned books talk about topics that are related, realistic, and timely. Children reading these books might find a character that is going through what they are going through, and this may help the reader deal with specific life issues such as grief, bullying, sexual assault, divorce, and sexual identity. An example is “The Outsider,” which is a compelling teen rebel story. This book was banned when middle-schoolers will tell you it is the book that turned them into readers. These books also help children develop empathy towards individuals going through certain things in life. Napoli says that it is not only unprotected children that need to read these books. Also protected children should read such books to understand what happens and the people such things happen to. They need to read these books to develop empathy for their fellow children going through the same things. When children are not aware of the reasons why certain things happen to their friends, they start bullying them and make them feel they are the reasons why such events are taking place. They need to know bad things sometimes happen to good people. “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” is a book that talks about an African American family that is going through racism in Mississippi, the 1930s. This book was banned because it talks about racism. This story can help children understand what racism is, why it happens, and how it affects other individuals.

In conclusion, parents are trying to protect children from the reality of life. From what really happens and they will most probably face when they grow up or are facing at the moment. Children do not need saving from information about what they are going through or might go through in the future; they need such information to learn how to protect themselves and live with other people who are going through the same things. Banning of books cannot save a child from their reality, helping them face it will. Thus children’s literature with themes of sexuality, divorce, grief, and racism should not be banned. Children need this information more than they need fairytales.
