Social inequality

Social problems refer to conditions that disrupt the smooth functioning of society. This may be in the form of racism, crime, social deviance, or social inequality, where they seem to shatter the functionality of the community. For instance, social difference is a major social problem facing society today. Social equality is where there are distinctions, especially when it comes to rewarding or giving opportunities in certain social positions (Popiel, 2016). In a society where social inequality is practiced, opportunities are granted to individuals basing on their statuses, and thus there are unequal chances for everyone in the community. Social inequality is practiced in various domains such as schooling, power, and in a race where individuals are not given equal opportunities. Social inequality as a social problem has more effects on society, especially under micro and macro perceptions.

On micro perspectives that focus on special effects from a social problem is that social inequality as a problem causes anxiety and stress to individuals since they are not given the same opportunities. This stress may affect one health and may be the cause of high mortality rates (Kunst et al., 2017). Additionally, social inequality also leads to reduced trust levels by individuals. In a society where difference is not practiced; individuals may choose not to participate in social issues.

On the macro level, social inequality may have severe impacts on society, especially in its economy. Social difference in a community tends to bring the financial crisis in the marketplace, and thus the economy becomes unstable. Furthermore, the economy is also affected by the high rates of debts and inflation rates that affect society’s development. Moreover, inequality in society results in to increase in crime rates since many individuals not given opportunities to the society end up finding new survival tactics. Thus, the community may experience cases of robbery and prostitution (Cheung & Lucas,2016). Lastly, social inequality may also lead to a reduction in social mobility, especially in times when difference extends to the education domain. Education is a significant contributor to social movement. Thus, variation in schooling may hinder an organization’s social mobility that may be the cause of poverty levels in those societies.

Different theoretical perspectives, such as functionalist, interactionalist, and conflict, can be used to explain the cause of some social issues in society. However, functionalist theoretical perspectives seem to provide more explanation of social inequality as a social problem. Equality is not exceptional in the community today since it determines the whole functioning of society (Popiel, 2016). According to the functionalists, the organization requires togetherness for it to run smoothly. Therefore, harmony and unity are critical drivers for the essential effective functioning of society.

Additionally, the theory adds that every pattern, that is, youth, men, and women are vital for the development of society.  Therefore, each group should be given equal opportunities for participants to build a community together. Functionalists hold that there is a lot of inequality in many fields. For instance, in race and ethnicity, and thus should be avoided to bring togetherness in the society to achieve its development.

The study of different theoretical perspectives has an understanding of the existence of particular social problems in society widely. Notably, social inequality as a social problem the functionalist theory widens the understanding by letting one understand that social stratification among the cause of meritocracy.on the other hand, conflict theory has also been being critical in explaining the social inequality where the conflictionalists hold that variation is due to power differences (Goldthorpe,2017). Thus, social inequality exists in society as a result of continued power repress among the powerful and powerless individuals, which is mainly done to maintain the status quo. Social inequality as a problem can be alleviated by bringing forth residential segregation to an end, investing in education, and also by increasing the wages of individuals.

Social inequality has extended to higher ranks and is practiced in many areas, and thus there is a need to alleviate it. The possible solutions that can be used to reduce inequality include educating members of society. Implementing education programs to the community can help create awareness for the individuals and thus can be aware in times they are prohibited on their rights (Cheung & Lucas, 2016). Opening a democratic trade policy is another solution that can be used to reduce inequality. Since it will help solve disparities in race and ethnicity basis. The other final possible solution to social inequality in society is organizing worker’s rights and ensuring it is prioritized everywhere. Prioritizing worker’s rights will prevent violation of one’s rights, especially in participation.

In conclusion, social inequality is a problem that is insulated in today’s society and has adverse effects on individuals. As a result of social inequality, cases of discrimination and segregation have introduced gaps in the relationship of various communities in society today. Social inequality difference tends to hinder community development due to divisions that do not bring togetherness in the city (Cheung & Lucas,2016). Therefore, social inequality should be reduced to make society become a better place to accommodate everyone regardless of their background or race.
