My Writing Journey

Writing may sound easy as it involves putting a pen on a paper and scribbling, but as one gains deep interest, he or she realizes that it requires skills and knowledge to meet the main objective of which is to communicate. Writing is one of the ways used to represent languages with symbols and signs. The write-ups can be transcribed into spoken language and stored for future reference or transmitted to other geographical locations. Writing is not a language but perceived as a tool to convey messages in any readable language of interest. Writing is dependent on many aspects, which are the same as structures of speech such as semantics, grammar, and vocabulary, but the difference is that writing entails signs and symbols. Initially, I had a perception that writing is only meant to present a language using symbols and signs, but later as time elapses, I got exposed to many write-ups that acted as an eye-opener to the writing field that was my passion. I realized that writing entails a lot of aspects other than designing the signs and symbols on a paper, and it must be learned gradually to attain a desirable outcome. Writing is a life worth doing, using creativity, re-writing words, and sentences or passages to get the real aspects of what it holds. We may fail, get annoyed, and do things that don’t yield instant results as we write, but as we keep progressing in the passion, increasing the combinations of our efforts, it results into success. This paper, therefore, extensively elaborates on how I learned to write, my experience and goals in writing, what I achieved, and aspire to get in the writing journey.

Writing is a journey, and pen and paper have been part of my life since my childhood when I used to scribble on my father’s notebook, or on the walls whenever I come across a pen, I would even use sticks to scribble on dust outside the house. As much as the write-ups were not making any meaning, they helped in creating a strong and strengthening my writing foundation because up to now, I cannot let or pass across a pen without putting something down with meaning. I give credit to my neighborhood, where most of my siblings and friends used to love art, which entailed drawing and modeling, bringing up the differences, although mine was in the form of words. I loved writing so much to the extent that I would copy the content of a magazine or any published work, and textbooks on a plain paper. I grew up learning more aspects of writing, including other use of writing, like persuasion, where the writer aims to influence the reader, Narration, where the writer tells a story and Description, where the author interprets and explains something properly. Writing can also be used for expository to elaborate on a subject to the targeted audience, developing something openly to make the audience understand it better and get the point that was intended to be passed on to them.

Despite the passion and love I had in writing, it has not been a walk in the park as I anticipated. The learning process has been gradual, with various ups and downs, which have assisted in strengthening and sharpening my skills and knowledge in writing. The reality of writing started hitting me when I joined the middle school and realized that I had to consider the structure, flow, audience, purpose, organization, presentation, and vocabularies to utilize in every write-up to effectively convey the intended message. Writing started sounding sophisticated because I could not comprehend the attributes of good writing to compose a readable text with good flow and structure. My teacher of English, on the other side, seemed to bombard me with many corrections, which sounded redundant and boring to me. The teacher kept correcting almost every sentence in my texts, and I was almost giving up on the whole idea of writing better. The situation got worse, and I even felt like concentrating on mathematics and science courses would be better than English writings. The greatest challenge was not quickly grasping and implementing the concepts taught in class. I found myself lagging behind almost in every topic and made me feel agitated. No one feels good whenever they are left behind something significant.

I recollected myself and traced the main source of the challenges that were most common in my writing. The first thing was to accept my failure, then planned on creating a platform that could help me start again in a stronger and more informed way. I took the initiative to approach my teacher of English who noticed the negative attitude I had in writing. I was so grateful that the teacher accepted my request and was ready to assist religiously. I started by writing a single paragraph each day, submitting them to the teacher for reviewing and correction. I did it consistently before moving to two paragraphs, and later to one and several pages. At first, the work was tiresome, considering the many revisions that I had to do in correcting the mistakes and get on the right path. I had no choice but to get used to the terms and conditions which the teacher set because they were all for my benefit and good. The teacher introduced me to reading several storybooks, journals, and peer-reviewed articles that helped me significantly. Today I am a great fun of accessing these books and journals every time, expanding my knowledge and skills in writing. I formed a habit of reading the relevant and credible pieces of published works. I am glad that I graduated from high school with great command in the English language, both the written and spoken. I realized learning any concept is possible, provided there is consistency, hard work, and sacrifice. Where there is a will, there is always a way out. The task seemed challenging with many obstacles, but my will to succeed was the driving force to achieving.

The English courses I learned in high-school assisted in shaping and perfecting my skills with knowledge in the English language. Currently, I can produce a full text with a good flow of words, structure, and organization in each paragraph and targeting the desired audience. The primary motivation behind this progress and success is my teacher of English, who had introduced me to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and pointed out my weaknesses to ensure I was at the same level as the rest of the class. Having the (IEP) had many challenges, considering I came from a different level with other students in the same grade, and it made me work harder so I could learn like the rest of them who were excelling in their work. The program helped me realize my potential in writing and gave me hopes of pursuing my passion further. Currently, I have grasped most of the skills and knowledge of compiling a standard text and also developed the ability to read and evaluate various articles and determine their strengths and weaknesses.

My writing journey has not been that easy but full of challenges and obstacles which I had to work on to build, strengthen, and polish to achieve the goals of being the best in writing. Currently, I consider myself a good writer, but I still hope to learn more from the English courses at the University. I believe it will pave the way to my career goals of becoming a great author in the country. I can compose a text to the targeted audience using the relevant vocabularies meant for the intended message in my current writing, as opposed to the past, where I would only write without considering the intention of the message to be conveyed. I plan to write some of the great books that will be recommended in many institutions, which will be basing their research on the quality and credibility of my writing. I am happy I did not quit writing, and instead, I got motivated to venture into writing intensively. I believe my work and journey are a motivation for any person thinking about how to start writing and any other works away from education. The starting point might seem hard, but the results are satisfying and rewarding. Keep going on!
