The kind of interpretation from this news report is beat bias

Part 1 question a).

The kind of interpretation from this news report is beat bias. The journalist tries to focus on limited beats of the topic throughout the topic. The possible interpretation of this report is that the government banned the wearing of masks. As a result of this ban, some resistance arose from some advocates that are against the ban. To illustrate this interpretation, in the news report the government, represented by Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, the secretary for justice, supports the ban of wearing masks by anyone during protests while there are some advocates, example Johannes Chan Man-num, a constitutional law scholar who is against the ban.

Frames can be defined as patterns of making sense of what happens in the world (D`Angelo & Kuypers, 2010) . The first textual mechanism of news framing used in the article is called issue-specific frame. The issue-specific frame is a kind of framing that involves setting the agenda around one particular topic. In the case of this news report, the journalist has accurately maintained the topic on the banning of wearing masks during protests, by the government.

The second textual mechanism of news framing mechanism used is in this news report as interpreted is the generic framing. Generic framing is a kind of framing that reflects on the human interest, responsibility, morality and conflict within a society according to this news article. This is illustrated by the conflict between the government and the advocates about the ban of wearing the masks during protests.

1 b). The potential media agenda about the anti-mask law from the news report is the challenges faced by the government for banning the wearing of masks by anyone during protests.

The first challenge as illustrated in the news report is that participants of the protests may be wearing masks with no intention of committing the crime but simply to protect themselves as said a constitutional law scholar called Johannes Chan. The government has a challenge proving that any of the participants wearing masks are going to commit a crime.

The second illustration is that the ban may incorporate the bystanders who may not be involved in the protest but wearing the mask. This will be infringing their rights. A law advocate, Barrister Tien Kei-rui that in the legal paper, there is no mention of “persons taking part” in the protests thus, those bystanders are involved and maybe fined the HK$25,000 as fine. The government may not be able to prove that the bystanders are also in the protest; thereby, the court may rule against the ban.

Two alternative media agendas

  1. Hong Kong courts have no power to rule on face mask ban. This is a news article title posted on the guardian 19 November 2019. The writer, Verna Yu, says that experts among the China top legislatures stated that Hong Kong Courts had no constitutional right to ban the wearing of face masks as indicated by the city`s Basic Law. Also, in this article, Verna writes that the Chinese legislative affairs commission`s spokesman, Jian Tiewei, that the ruling had severely weakened the governance of the city.
  2. Hong Kong court rules face mask ban unconstitutional. This is the media agenda of the news posted on the 22 November 2019 on the DW news column. The article states that the Hong Court ruled that banning of wearing face masks was incompatible with the Hong Kong basic laws. Question 2 Operation Red Sea

a). The film genre of Operation Read Sea is an action war film. A film can be defined by the manner of presentation, plot pattern and distinctive emotional effect. An action film usually includes big-budget, physical stunts and plots with the rescue, battles, fights and destructive crises. As an action war film, Operation Red Sea follows the following dimensions as illustrated in the movie description article;

  1. The manner of presentation.

Operation Red Sea is described as a film that follows the adventures of a Chinese naval team called the Jiaolong Assault Team who defeats the pirates of the coast of Somalia in a war and thus portrays the genre of this film as an action war film.

  1. Plot pattern

The plot of this film is set such that there is a problem created then it is solved. This is illustrated by the Jiaolong Commandos defeating the pirates. Then the terrorists attack them before accomplishing their mission of evacuating the Chinese nationals from the fictional African war-torn nation of Yawire. The plot displayed is MacGuffin.

  1. The distinctive emotional effect

The Operation Red Sea film is set to evoke tension and also to evoke happiness at the end of the film later. The tension arises when the terrorists take a Chinese scientist hostage intending to find materials for weapons of mass destruction. This tension is fully kept in the action-packed film until the mission is finally accomplished.

The social implication of the genre of films on the performance of box office in Hong Kong and mainland china is that although the total box office receipts in the few past years has risen, most people in mainland china watch the videos than those in Hong Kong thus box office action film genres are more preferred by the young age people who constitute the majority of the population. The reference below supports this.

2b). Auteur theory portrays the person who made the movie and most of the time thought of during the writing a film summary while the genre approach focuses on the iconography of the film and the story type that is being produced.

Components I would include in a film commentary while using the auteur theory

  • I would include the name of the director of the film like in the case of Operation Red Sea I would write Danie Lam.
  • I would also state the director`s creative vision as illustrated by the extract; a Hong Kong director who is a significant figure in Chinese action cinema.

components of the genre approach that I would include

  • I would include the type of film genre, for example, for the Operation Red Sea; I would write the genre as Action or Adventure.
  • I would also write a storyline about the film to let the audience know what is entailed in the movie before they watch it. For example, in the operation Red Sea description, the author has written a storyline of the film.
