IMPACT OF SMOKING CIGARETTE

Introduction

Cigarette smoking has several harmful effects on a human being’s body, and some have the potential of triggering life-threatening complications. Several studies reveal that the activity leads to an increased risk of succumbing from several health conditions. Smoking of cigarettes affects an individual’s circulatory organs and reproductive organs apart from causing cancer of the lungs. Smoking cigarettes can cause several cases of underweight born babies for an extended period by expectant mothers.

Context

The effects of smoking cigarettes on the reproductive system in human beings have significantly been overlooked. Risks of having erectile dysfunction are high in males when a person smokes more cigarettes for an extended period. The detrimental act also affects the quality of sperms in males reducing fertility rate. Adverse effects caused by the smoking of cigarettes in humans also leads to low life expectancy levels. On the other hand, expectant mothers are also at high risk of delivering underweight babies when they smoke cigarettes over a long period. Therefore, smoking cigarettes has harmful effects when it is done repeatedly for long periods.

Smoking negatively impacts male fertility

Smoking cigarettes adversely affects male fertility since it affects the sperm and quality of semen because of its components like nicotine. According to Chaudhuri (2013), men who smoke have reduced levels of sperm concentration, reduced motility, high levels of DNA damage in sperms, and lower levels of sperms that are usually shaped. There is a decrease in sperm concentration in men who smoke, which refers to the low quantity of sperm present in a man’s semen.

Sperm motility is the swimming ability of sperms, and men who smoke have reduced sperm mobility, unlike non-smoking men. Smoking cigarettes affects male fertility since sperms that are not able to swim well have difficulties reaching and fertilizing the egg because it affects sperm motility.  Sperm morphology refers to sperms shape, and those that have odd shapes have problems to swim to the egg. Male smokers are characterized by having sperms that are oddly shaped compared to non-smokers. Lastly, studies depict male smokers have high levels of DNA fragmentation in their sperms that affect embryo development and implantation.

Smoking lowers life expectancy of adults

Smoking cigarettes has the potential of causing premature demise in adults who smoke because of established information between smoking and diseases. According to Palloni, Novak, & Pinto-Aguirre (2015), two prevalent life-threatening conditions common to adults who smoke than non-smokers, are pulmonary disease and lung cancer. Death cases of lung cancer is steadily increasing and most affected gender are the males. In the United States of America, the life expectancy of non-smokers is twice as high as addicted smokers.

Maternal smoking Causes low birth weights and premature births

            There is an excellent relationship between maternal smoking while expectant, and reduced birth weighs to both singletons and twin births. Pollack, Lantz, and Frohna (2000) depicted that smoking affects the intrauterine environment that is critical in fetus development. The average birth weight of a healthy born baby is 2500 grams, which is rare in pregnant mothers who smoke. Underweight babies weight up to 1500 grams have been reported to be common in pregnant mothers who smoke.

Conclusion

            Smoking cigarettes has adverse effects on both male and female sets of human beings. It also affects the growth and development of children being born. The contents in cigarettes affect human life both directly and indirectly, such as causing cancer that lower life expectancy levels, damaging reproductive systems that affect fertility rate, premature births, and lowers birth weights.
