Expatriate life in India

We decided to recruit a Senior Software Engineer for Disney at Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The primary motivation for selecting India as the preferred country for our expatriate to work was the overall Expat Explorer ranking, which places this destination in the 18th position. This ranking proved to be reliable as it factored several aspects that expatriates have to address when relocating and settling in their new work stations. Since India provides a culturally rich and dynamic setting, the interview discussions should be tailored to select a candidate who is naturally adventurous. Owing to the diverse cultural background and prevailing economic conditions, the ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to adapt to new environments seamlessly. This is primarily because most expatriates in the HSBC survey underscore the importance of appreciating new cultures as a key factor in enjoying working in India.

Relocating to India as an expatriate is not for the faint hearted. It is for adventurous individuals who seek to experience diverse cultures and a different way of life while pursuing their careers. Through the personal insight of numerous expatriates who participat6ed in the HSBC Expat Explorer Survey while residing in India, the cultural diversity provided by the country shapes every other aspect of everyday life. Life as an expatriate in India blends both the traditional and modern to bring forth an unparalleled fusion. The respondents in this survey overwhelmingly agreed that working in India was an exciting opportunity to explore different cultures while pursuing career growth. Having considered both the financial and social aspects involved in expatriate life in India, and compared it to other countries, the general conclusion is that it is a move worth pursuing.

By using the HSBC country comparison tool, the selected candidate whose home country is the United States would quickly relocate to India, where the Disney job is available. The overall living conditions would not drastically change, as indicated by the provided rankings, which are nearly similar. However, the candidate might experience a harder time settling in compared to the conditions back home. The financial situation will be most affected since the income and economic stability are expected to decrease significantly. Career aspirations are also likely to take a dip. Despite all the unfavorable comparisons, the candidate should experience a lot of ease in making friends and schooling while in India. The ideal candidate should, therefore, be prepared to make the necessary adjustments to be a good fit for the job. It is, therefore, imperative to advise the candidate to keep an open mind throughout the recruitment process. The candidate should also be willing to make some sacrifices to fit the role.

Based on the expatriates’ views of India, as provided for by the HSBC survey, the global aging phenomena can be addressed by improving healthcare services as well as financial literacy and empowerment. Since most projections forecast a mostly aged global population soon, improving public healthcare and making it affordable and accessible to all members of society, would mostly benefit the aged people and guarantee longevity. Contrary to the case in India, where public health care is neglected, it should be heavily funded so as to cater to the aging population’s health needs. Another vital lesson learned on how to tackle the global aging phenomena is the need for improved financial literacy that educates people on how to prudently spend and save their money. This would ensure that the aging population has financial security and is self-reliant when they can no longer engage in productive work. All these are lessons that can be drawn from India’s shortcomings compared to countries in the developed world.
