Managing garbage

Managing garbage has, for a long time, been a problem in Shanghai China. The Chinese government has come up with strategies to help motivate the garbage collection, such as the Garbage Classification method. The garbage classification policy is facing a lot of challenges in Shanghai, such as non-compliance by people to follow the correct procedure when classifying the waste, the ineffectiveness of the policy in rural areas, unavailability of the facilities in some areas and high levels of garbage being produced, etc.

I am proposing a number of solutions that will significantly help in the classification method of garbage, and solve the major problem of waste management. One of the solutions is the education of the citizens by the government on the importance of embracing this new garbage collection method. Many of the citizens don’t know the importance of classifying garbage in a systematic manner, and that the classification process makes it easier for recycling of the waste products. The empowerment of citizens among themselves is also a good way of passing knowledge among citizens at the lower level. Citizens with a better understanding of this policy may help explain to fellow citizens that the effects of pollution are experienced by the citizens and that a healthy environment is beneficial for all of them.

Shanghai produces a lot of waste due to its large population. At some point, managing this large amount of garbage is hectic. Citizens should be educated in using environmentally friendly ways of carrying out their day to day activities. An example is the recycling of containers, shopping bags, utensils, and finding alternative ways to use waste products instead of disposing of them.  Reusing is also an efficient way to reduce waste, as it involves using more than once, reducing cost while keeping the environment clean. With this approach, waste produced will be low hence management and disposal.

Rewarding people is another good way to encourage people to do tasks without supervision.  The Chinese government should intervene in creating policies that will encourage its citizens to play an active role in clearing and being responsible for disposing of waste. The waste bins should also be automated to award points when someone disposes of waste. The points should then be made redeemable to purchase goods and services. With this type of approach, it will be easier to motivate people to actually dispose of garbage in the right way and eventually make it a culture.

Since sometimes it’s not easy for the government to reach every law offender, every citizen should be given the mandate to watch over their environment and keep it clean; this can be encouraged by putting a policy that allows one citizen to report another for garbage disposal offenses, and awarding the suspect apprehender for the good job done. This will make it easier to monitor everyone, with or without the presence of the government around, making everyone to be responsible and keen on how they dispose of their waste.

In Shanghai, the population is very high, and sometimes the facilities put in place for the purpose of collecting and classification of garbage may be ineffective. The high number of visitors visiting the city may not be aware of the policies put in place, so it is advisable that locals should take the personal initiative to inform visitors about their way of living in Shanghai and other major cities in China.

With most parts of the word taking the issue of garbage management as a problem that needs high addressing; it should be made open that companies dealing with waste management are raking in a lot of money, and it should be viewed as an economy that can help employ jobless citizens, and hence should be taken easily.
