Monsoon Weeding film review
Monsoon Weeding, Nair (2001) features popular Indian actors such as Vijay Raaz, Jas Arora, Vasundhara Das and Naseeruddin Shah. The film is a mix of a family drama and a romantic comedy. It is a story set of how a big family in modern India plans an expensive wedding that turns out to be chaotic. In the movie, Lalit Verma and his wife Pimmi Verma are organizing an expensive Indian traditional wedding between their daughter Aditi and Hemant Rai, who lives in the USA. However, Aditi, who has a secret with herself, is having second thoughts on the wedding, whereas her cousin Ayesha is beginning to notice that she is attracting boys.
The social relevance of a film is similar to its social impact on the society. The main question is, does the film have any effect on the society? Monsoon Wedding details romantic entanglements during a traditional Punjabi wedding in Delhi. At the same time, it cautiously handles sensitive issues like pre-arranged marital infidelity and child abuse. In India, both boys and girls aged between 5 and 12 years’ experience the same risk of being abused by someone close to them.
Moreover, half of the victims do not report the incident. For example, Ria suffered silently for a long time before reporting the abuse when she was already an adult. As seen in the film, one common effect of child abuse is that the victim lacks passion in his/her current life. The bride to be, Aditi approaches Ria for lacking passion in her present life.
